Update from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) on the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA):

It’s been over six months since we closed the 2023 CHNA Survey. As we make progress on our most inclusive and largest CHNA ever, we wanted to provide updates on data collection, data cleaning and analysis, and when you can expect to see results.

2023 Accomplishments

With the support of over 50 MCDPH staff and hundreds of community members and partners, we collected over 18,000 survey responses from Maricopa County residents. This includes 4,990 paper surveys and 504 surveys in non-English languages!

Our work made the headlines! Click to read the Maricopa CHNA spotlight featured in the Big Cities Health Coalition blog highlighting the importance of community partnerships, accessibility, and inclusivity for survey participation.

What’s going on in 2024?

CHNA Community Survey Data Analysis

With a large completion rate comes the added responsibility of ensuring that community voices are accurately represented in the data. Our team is working diligently to finalize data cleaning and analysis by establishing an equitable framework for evaluating written-in and translated responses. Data cleaning and analysis will continue through early 2024.

Watch this short video to learn more about how the team developed a health equity framework for data collection and community partnership.

CHNA Focus Group and Key Informant Interviews

While the survey is a significant component of the CHNA process, there are other data collection efforts we utilize to better understand the community’s needs and experiences. In early 2024, we will publish a report summarizing data from over 40 focus groups conducted in 2023. Additionally, we will conduct key informant interviews which will explore community strengths and assets, the built environment, and forces of change.

On the Horizon

Throughout the year, we will be sharing data and reports featuring CHNA data collection findings. To be notified when data and reporting becomes available, please click here to sign-up to the CHNA email list.

Visit maricopahealthmatters.org to read more about the CHNA process, view past results, and sign up for our email list. For questions or comments, please email maricopahealthmatters@maricopa.gov.

We want to thank you again for all your support in 2023. We look forward to working with you in the new year!

News from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Data Advisory Committee (DAC):

Are you interested in joining a Health Improvement Implementation Team?

Are you a voice for health equity at your organization or in your community? The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) has a state Health Improvement Plan (AzHIP) which provides a unique opportunity to transform the health of our communities through strong, innovative partnerships. At least once a quarter, implementation teams made up of health advocates from organizations all across the state come together to help shape and define the work of the plan with ADHS.

There are active implementation teams for each of the following areas:

  • Health Equity
  • Mental Well-Being
  • Social Determinants of Health
  • Rural and Urban Underserved Health
  • Pandemic Recovery and Resiliency

In the Fall of 2023, the AzHIP work plan was updated using a collaborative approach informed by dialogue with stakeholders at numerous sessions - now is a perfect time to join an implementation team! Reach out to Sergio Perez at azhip@azdhs.gov if you’re interested in joining an implementation team. Share your insight with us as we work to improve the health and wellness of all Arizonans. *Note: The updated work plan has yet to be published, but you can look for updates on azdhs.gov/azhip.
