A prayer responding to war in Israel and Gaza

BY TERI MCDOWELL OTT

(Presbyterian Outlook)

Eternal God,

You know our history of complicated conflicts, tense polarization, and situations so politicized that we are afraid to say or pray anything. Yet we know you grieve the violence of war and condemn acts of terrorism. We know you grieve the historical suffering of Jews and Palestinians. May our prayers for peace be uttered out loud for all to hear, our prayers for diplomacy, and for difficult, yet faithful conversation to resume.

God, we groan in grief over the news of this war in Israel and Gaza. Pave a path toward peace in this age-old, tragic conflict. Protect the innocent wherever bombs of destruction fall. Be with those who are captured and the families of those who are captured. Offer a way out for those who are trapped. Awaken us to our common humanity, our common human needs no matter the walls we build.

Amen.

Attached is a letter sent by a South Sudanese American in rebuttal to South Sudan President Kiir's very optimistic and perhaps dishonest speech delivered to the recent United Nations General Assembly. In my opinion, the author does an excellent (and appropriately emotional) job of laying out the truth. I expect that her words reflect the opinions of the great bulk of the South Sudanese people and if asked, they would have agreed.

To a large extent, her description of the situation of the South Sudanese people and the circumstances reflect the environment in which our Trinity and SGPC South Sudan Ministry Team works. The State Department seems pessimistic for near term improvement (See quote below). However, the South Sudanese people are good people with horrible leadership. We try to encourage them as well as assist with education, humanitarian assistance, regional peacebuilding, and evangelism. Our programs are under an umbrella we call "Peace Through Evangelism".  Next year we hope to expand that program to a second Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan and initiate a program called "South Sudan-Peace for this Generation."

Your continuing prayers and support are essential to our success. Thank you!

In His Service,

Bill Andress

Secretary, Trinity and Boma South Sudanese Ministries

Trinity Presbytery-Wide Vital Book Study is Underway!

Want to Participate? Join Your Cluster.

Many churches, especially small congregations, are facing numerous challenges. Church leaders are not in denial of

this difficult state. In fact, they recognize that the first step toward change and moving toward revitalizing is the

admission of the current reality.

If you are interested in participating in an open discussion about the how to work toward actions and solutions to the challenges we are facing in our churches, join one of the Trinity Presbytery Cluster’s Vital Book Study: Reaching

People under 40 while Keeping People over 60—Being Church for All Generations. The book may be purchased at Amazon or your local book store.

God has given us excellent Co-Facilitators, experienced in preaching, teaching and leading to facilitate this Vital Book Study for our Presbytery.

Find your cluster and Co-Facilitators below and join in with study buddies across the presbytery to seek God and solutions to the challenges of our churches. Special recognition will be given to all participants.
