Tips for Nonprofits, Donors, and Professional Advisors

What's YOUR Motivation?

There are over 1.8 million nonprofits in the U.S. alone -- equivalent to 130 nonprofits for every McDonald's. That's a lot of choices. How do we choose which organizations to support?

Many donors have nonprofits near and dear to their heart, such as the local animal shelter where they rescued their dog or a research center studying a disease that has affected a loved one. At the same time, donors also want their hard-earned dollars to be spent effectively.

Expert charity evaluators have identified outstanding nonprofits that can be at least 100 times as impactful at saving and improving lives, but most people haven't heard of such organizations!

What's the solution? Rather than choosing between your favorite nonprofit and an expert-recommended nonprofit, why not support both? A tool called Giving Multiplier is an award-winning, evidence-based donation platform created by researchers at Harvard University to help you do exactly that -- providing a solution to the "heart vs. head" dilemma in charitable giving.

Giving Multiplier's unique approach allows you to split your donation between your personal favorite nonprofit and one of ten super-effective nonprofits, with matching funds added on top of all donations.

Think about your own motivations to give...and read more about Matt Coleman below:

Matt completed his PhD in Experimental Psychology at Northeastern University, where his research examined how people think and feel about global catastrophic risks, the well-being of future generations, and the impact of charitable giving. Learn even more about Matt here: Matthew Coleman

A Tip for Nonprofits: Did you know the practice of GivingTuesday started in 2012? Fast-forward ten years: $3.1 billion was raised for nonprofits on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 in the U.S. alone! Will this special day of giving (December 3rd this year) pass you by? Read more here from the official GivingTuesday team: Impact - GivingTuesday

A Tip for Donors: Adding further to the concept above about the motivation to give, the National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP) says that "even the most enthusiastic...donors often become...anxious, causing them to...curtail their giving, which in turn, hinders impact and strips the joy out of philanthropy." In their July report titled "Overcoming Psychological Barriers to Giving," NCFP explores the ten most common barriers to giving and provides actionable ways for donors to overcome those barriers. A Tip for Professional Advisors: December is the biggest month of giving. Do you know how to help your clients donate non-cash assets, which are estimated to be over 90% of Americans' portfolio? This link by one nonprofit displays many different ways to give and how to be prepared to make those gifts. Get in the know and make it easier for your clients!
