Dear Friends,
When we moved our young family from Michigan to St. Louis quite a while ago, we first visited a United Methodist Church that was not too far from home (so we could be less late for church). We really liked the preacher, Rev. Dr. Kerr. Plus, there was a mid-week ministry called Salem Night which was something that our kids were used to from our church in Michigan.
I was new, a little overwhelmed with the move and not feeling all that confident about inserting myself into the life of a new church. So, after we all ate dinner together at Salem Night, I helped my kiddos get to their respective children’s choirs, then instead of taking part in any of adult small group opportunities that were available, I helped clean the tables then just waited until the children’s activities were finished.
Within just a few weeks of starting to attend Salem Night, Rev. Kerr’s wife, Marsha, started a conversation with me while we were both clearing a table after dinner. I don’t know how it came up, but I shared with Marsha that I used to sing in a church choir when we lived in Chicago but had stopped doing that while we lived in Michigan. Marsha responded immediately, “You sing?! Then you need to come upstairs with me to rehearse with the Contemporary Singers group. Come on. Let’s just go.” And so, we did. And so, I became a part of this music ministry, and later several more ministries.
I probably would have gotten involved in the ministries of the church over time, but Marsha, in her unique, positive, direct way, opened the door right then. I really loved singing with that group for several years. It was truly a blessing for me.
There is one more little part of the story that I will tell you on Sunday. But for now, I’ll let you know that this Sunday, as we continue our Freed-2-Lead sermon series, we will talk about the important and powerful role the church has in calling out the gifts and graces we see in others, then following up by supporting them in trying out these gifts. I am excited for us to learn and share more about this practice that some refer to as “I C N U” (I see in you.). What might someone C N U? And what might you C N someone else? Come together on Sunday and we will C.
God’s grace and peace be with you,
Pastor Kim

This year the worship services and small group discussions will be guided by the book, “The Third Day” which celebrates the power of the resurrection in the lives of people who knew Jesus during his ministry on earth and in our lives now! These additional learning opportunities actually begin before Lent starts. They are two, 2- session classes that are led by the LIfewiseStL Learning Forum staff. All four classes are on Sundays at 12:45 after worship, with lunch served at 12:15. You are invited to make one or both of these learning opportunities part of your Lenten discipline this year
Learning opportunity with Community Unity Steering team led by LIfewiseStL Urban Forum Team
The Community Unity Steering Team is inviting MUMC church leadership to join them in a series of learning experiences led by the Lifewise STL Urban Forum Team. These classes will help inform our next steps forward. Classes will have an emphasis on the impact of race and the information presented will be tailored to fit the needs of the MRH school district area. This will be an eye opening experience for many of us to step into the shoes of those who are in need of additional support. Hopefully, these classes will help us to learn what kind of support families need.

Last week we learned about Saul and how it is hard to change. We discussed why it is important to pray and each child made a prayer box to take home.
This week we will learn about our spiritual gifts and how each person has a gift that is unique to them!
