America’s Flagship Faces Headwinds; Attracts National Attention

Search Continues to Find A New Home for the SS United States

While we await the Judge’s decision in the dispute with the SS United States' landlord in Philadelphia, the Conservancy continues to work around the clock to find another location for America's Flagship and to raise the necessary resources to keep the ship afloat. Our efforts to secure a new pier for the SS United States and safeguard her future are making national news.

"All Things Considered," a nationally syndicated program on NPR, recently featured a story about the pier dispute, brought against the Conservancy by the vessel's landlord, Penn Warehousing, and the ship's future prospects. Conservancy Board member Warren Jones told WHYY, the Philadelphia NPR affiliate, "The rental agreement that [Penn Warehousing] wrote and presented to [the Conservancy] had no provision in it for escalating the rent and it even had no time limit on the lease..."

As for the ship's future port-of-call, Conservancy President Susan Gibbs told NPR, "There are a number of different possibilities, and we are open to any of them at this point...Time is of the essence." CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO NPR'S STORY ON THE SS UNITED STATES.

Axios Philadelphia, a local affiliate of the DC-based online news outlet, also featured the ship's current plight and her future potential, noting that the SS United States Conservancy is actively searching for another home for the ship: "They've written to President Biden offering to donate the vessel to the government to keep it from being scrapped..." "America Right Now" on NEWSMAX TV recently traveled to Philadelphia to cover the Conservancy's push to encourage federal officials to help save America's Flagship.

Conservancy President Susan Gibbs emphasized the crucial role played by Conservancy members: "We need a new home for the ship...We have made steady progress, beginning with developing a base of supporters from every state in the nation and 40 countries overseas..."

Gibbs added that, "This ship bears the name of our nation and if our country cannot figure out a way to hold on to it after all this time, it would really be unfortunate." CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE FULL PACKAGE FROM NEWSMAX NOW.

Conservancy Board member Warren Jones also joined Fox & Friends Weekend recently, telling host Will Cain, "She is the ultimate American product...She has been an ambassador to the world. There's been so much pride in this ship and she needs to be saved."

"We have a great plan ready to go... that is commercially viable and is privately funded...," Jones said about the ship’s redevelopment prospects. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE INTERVIEW ON FOX NEWS.

NEW BOOK BY FORMER CIA OFFICER FEATURES THE BIG U

Jonna Mendez, a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer has a forthcoming autobiography that features none other than America's Flagship.

In the book, Menendez writes in part, "We traveled home on the SS United States, the largest and most luxurious ship ever built in America and the world’s fastest ocean liner... We soon discovered we were the youngest and least well-heeled couple in that part of the ship. Clearly in need of a cover story that would explain how we were affording such opulence, John posed as a rock ’n’ roll DJ from Hollywood, figuring the many older passengers wouldn’t challenge him on that. To hold up my end of the deal, I donned my form-fitting green velvet high school prom dress, which I’d already had shortened, and proceeded to win the dance contest partnered with the ship’s handsome dance instructor..."

KUDOS TO THE TEAM AT THE BATTLESHIP NEW JERSEY

This week the Battleship New Jersey, berthed across the Delaware River from the SS United States, is scheduled to enter an historic dry dock maintenance period for the first time in over 30 years. The Battleship will be dry docked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard at Dry Dock #3, where she was built during the late 1930s and launched from on Dec. 7, 1942.

One year ago, the Battleship's social media team came aboard America's Flagship to create several informative and engaging videos comparing the two ships.

We extend our best wishes to the team at the Battleship New Jersey. They have worked tirelessly to preserve and prepare the world's fastest, longest, and most decorated battleship in American history, for a bright future. We look forward to the day when both ships have been fully revitalized and stand proudly as icons of America's maritime accomplishments.

"Donations to the Conservancy are important because that's what keeps the ship here. That's what keeps the lights on and lets people come back. But most importantly it keeps it here so that it can be repurposed...." - Arthur Harman, former passenger and Conservancy supporter
