10:30am Sunday Service: Welcoming Softness

As a church community, softness has a lot to teach us about welcoming in new people, new ideas, and creative energy. As the Membership Team leads a listening session after the service about why First Universalist wants to grow, let us remain soft to those who are making their way through the front door.

Speaker: Rev. Lane-Mairead Campbell

Masking in the First Universalist church building is now optional, please respect any distancing requests by fellow attendees. A mask-required section of the sanctuary is designated for those preferring to stay masked.

Upcoming Events &
Additional Announcements

Our Service Auction 2024 was a hit!

Thanks so much to all who donated, bid, helped, and joined in the fun! We had a great lunch, SO many participants, lots of laughs, AND we raised money to support our church’s programs. Be sure to check out the list of unsold items on the website, and email finance@uuroc.org if you’d like to buy one.

Stewardship 2024: Love Calls Us On - Dream a little dream with us!

The Stewardship Team is asking us to dream about future initiatives. In January, we asked the Board and church leadership to dream about new projects we might pledge to support in the year ahead. In February we are asking everyone to take part in dreaming how Love Calls Us On toward our future. What do you wish our church could do? There is a bulletin board in the Clara Barton Lounge that shows some ideas. Sticky notes are available to add your own ideas. Online folks can send ideas to stewardship@uuroc.org.

Tuesday, February 13 | Drop-In Discussion: Rev. Lane-Mairead Series—Staying Soft

Brené Brown writes about having a strong back, soft front, and wild heart in order to live vulnerably and authentically. How do we maintain softness? How do we embrace softness as a gift? Drop-in Discussions meet via Zoom on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:30pm. Look on the First Universalist homepage for details and a link, or click the Zoom meeting link in this blurb title!

Thursday, February 15 | Eastman at Washington Square: "Lunchtime with Ludwig"

Eastman at Washington Square Concerts take place on Thursdays at 12:15 to 12:45pm in our sanctuary. February 15 is "Lunchtime with Ludwig": Come and enjoy Beethoven's works for violin and piano performed by violinist Claire An and pianist Irina Lupines. Admission is free!

Sunday, February 18 | February Social Justice Plate Offering

Our February Plate Offering will be donated to REACH Advocacy. REACH is dedicated to working for more equitable housing policies and practices — committed to the belief that housing is a human right and working to see that this value informs the public dialogue around housing justice. Our congregation is a supporter of this organization, as they have been instrumental in providing emergency housing before, during, and since the pandemic. They are working to construct a Tiny Homes Village and collaborate with other City programs to expand the provision of safe housing for all. We believe, as they do, that housing is a human right. Please give generously to support their efforts.

Sunday, February 18 | Membership Committee: Listening Session!

In preparation for membership growth initiative, the Membership

Committee is going to conduct a listening session with the congregation on February 18, 2024 after the service. Please plan to attend. Your input is needed. This session will help us prepare for the membership consultant. Three questions that will be discussed are

  1. What does our church have to offer new members?
  2. How are we willing to change to help our membership grow?
  3. Why do we want to grow?

Monday, February 19 | Eastman Faculty Recital

Join our music director, Dr. Brock Tjosvold, for his first faculty recital at the Eastman School of Music. His program explores the music and the lasting legacies of Lili and Nadia Boulanger. It will take place in Kilbourn Hall at Eastman on Monday, February 19 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are required to attend in person, but it will also be live streamed at https://www.esm.rochester.edu/live/kilbourn/

Thursday, February 29 | Breakfast for All sponsored by Homeless Outreach Team

The Homeless Outreach Team will provide breakfast from 10am to noon in the Clara Barton Lounge. Clothing and counseling will be available. All are welcome to attend the Eastman at Washington Square concert afterwards in the sanctuary.

Sunday, March 3 | In-Church Drop-In Discussion: What will the next 100 years bring?

If we look back on 100 years of human progress, the world has changed immeasurably. Technology, societal standards, fashion, mores, and cultural awareness are but a few differences over the past 10 decades. What may happen in the next 100 years in the world? Will there be an increase of cultural awareness, submission to climate change, technological multiverses, genetically designed people, human/computer hybrids? How will we communicate? Will this be a utopia or a dystopia? Join David Damico as we discuss and share our thoughts and feelings. In-person drop-in discussions will continue through the church year on the first Sunday of the month at 9:15am in the Chalice Room.

Housing For All Interest Form!

Recently we asked you to fill out a checklist of proposed projects for Housing For All. If you missed it, we still want to know your interests! Please pick up a paper copy of the list titled “Group Projects - Interest Areas” at either entrance to the sanctuary, fill it out and leave it in the box at the front of the sanctuary. Or fill out the online form here. This is to indicate interest, not a commitment. We want to hear from you, whether you’re a long-time member or new to the church. Questions? Ask Marti Eggers or Chris DeGolyer.
