Come on in, the water’s fine!

Speaker and coordinator - Sean Dunham

On Sunday, September 10th we'll be coming together after our summer hiatus. We will celebrate together, welcoming old and new friends as well as looking forward to the excitement of the upcoming year. We will be holding a water ceremony as part of the service. This is a traditional UU ritual that reminds us that no matter how far apart we are, or how we gather, we are connected by unseen, yet real threads of communion within our Fellowship. The ceremony serves as a symbolic reminder of our individuality, our interconnectedness, and our existence within the interdependent web of all existence.

Please consider bringing a small amount of water with you for the ceremony. The water can come from anywhere – the Mississippi River, Lake Bemidji, your rain gauge, or your well. We will also have water available at the Peace Center.

Carolyn Towler is providing music. We look forward to seeing you all there!

There will be a potluck after the service today, so please bring a dish to share.

Being Welcoming

speaker - David Leidl

coordinator - Maggie Carlson

David’s background is that of a Franciscan brother. In an ironic turn, he ended that assignment after 11 years, requesting dispensation from vows, and leaving religious life after 33 years.

David now has an active practice as a spiritual director. He is a musician, potter, artist, gardener, cook, and baker.

Currently, David provides respite care and individualized support for people living with dementia. He is in the process of seeking a publisher for his book, Remembering Our Future: Spiritual Life and the Dementia Experience.

David will speak today about the importance of learning about being welcoming from our experiences of daily life with the natural world and those we sometimes believe we have lost to Dementia.

The Door Coffeehouse

speaker - Joyce Day

coordinator -

HUUF is welcoming Joyce Day to speak to us about a unique shelter for people located in La Porte. Several people from our fellowship have enjoyed visiting The Door Coffee in Laporte, MN. There they met Joyce who informed them that the shop helps support people in need through a program called Level Ground. They recommended the owner of the shop speak to us about this ministry.

"Level Ground’s mission is a Gospel of Jesus Christ mission providing basic needs and resources for life changing programs for those in need. We are a 30 day transitional shelter for those looking for a hand up to their next step.

Level Ground empowers people by offering resources for lasting change to break the cycle of poverty and addiction. Level Ground offers hope to the hopeless, healing to the broken, life to the lifeless and peace to the chaos. We want to help others find refuge and restoration and build healthy relationships. "

We hope to see you there. Feel free to invite people you know who may be interested in supporting people in need.

Welcome back to the new Fellowship year! I hope everyone had a great summer and are ready for a new beginning at HUUF. We held two activities for children this summer during the Circle Conversations the adults held in June and July. New friendships were made, and overall I think the children were happy seeing their HUUF friends. I am looking forward to hearing the children’s stories of their summer adventures when we begin meeting each Sunday this Fellowship year.

This year’s overall theme for RGL is The Gifts of Our Faith. We will focus on ten beloved UU values and explore their potential to shape us and, in turn, shape the world.

September will begin with children exploring The Gifts of Welcome. Each Sunday includes an exploration of what it means to approach each other and life itself with the spirit of welcome.

Classes for children will take place at 10am during the worship service. We start at the service and then leave for class after the Story For All Ages.

Childcare for children not attending RGL during the service will be available in the Childcare Room from 9:50am to 11:15am.

Please sign in your child/ren each Sunday at the Welcome table or Childcare Room.

The RGL committee will have their first meeting later in September after we have a better idea of RGL attendance for this year. If you have any comments or questions, please contact me on Sundays after service, or my phone number is 218-209-7155.

Sunday, Sept 10 -

Welcoming Our Many Sources Of Nourishment

This first Sunday we will be doing a water communion as part of the lesson. The children are welcome to bring a small amount of water to represent some place or thing special to them related to water.

Sunday, Sept 17 -

The Work of A Wider Change and Welcoming Change of Season

Sunday, Sept 24 -

Welcoming In The Work of Apology and Forgiveness

We are also excited to have reinvented our Introduce It section. Given that our overarching theme this year is “The Gifts of our Faith,” we have re-envisioned our Wonder Box section and are now calling it The Gift Box. This helps hold up the concept that our faith calls us to give and receive gifts. For instance, the UU value of welcoming contains the challenge to widen the circle for others but also contains the comforting message that you are welcomed as you are. This gift-centered frame also supports our movement's Article II discernment work of assessing which of our many UU values we need to give to the world most right now.

Social Justice Committee News

The social justice committee will be meeting on September 24th following the service and gathering in the RE room at 11:15.

The agenda begins with a review of the PRIDE Festival held in August and ideas for next year. We will also have a discussion of a potential social justice sponsored workshop this fall on Culture. This was suggested after the July meeting with Michael Meuers regarding culture. Looking forward to this coming year!

The Pride Festival co-committee chairs (Ruth Baker and Minna Furfaro) organized a wonderful booth to represent HUUF this year with a crafts table (well attended) and our sales of T-shirts and Pride Flags. We were joined by a MUUSJA member, Rev. Leslie Mills, who brought a powerful energy, and several HUUF members who graciously gave their time to help greet PRIDE folks with their love, energy, and smiles.

We have 19 t-shirts and 6 PRIDE flags left. They will be available for purchase at our social justice area at the Peace Center.
