What a banner year 2023 was for the ATA β not the least of which was getting recognized by both USTA NC and the 9-state region of USTA Southern for the Community Tennis Association of the Year!
Building on that energy, our 2024 Board is already in full throttle after a very smooth transition. (Special thanks goes to past Presidents Deb Southern and Jeff Joyce for making it so.) This fun loving, all-volunteer Board will be facilitating so many activities this year:
- Junior and Adult Lessons
- Asheville Open
- NJTL Terminettorsβ’
- Triples Socials
- Junior Team Tennis (JTT)
- Wheel Serve Asheville (Wheel Chair Tennis)
- Try Tennis and Try Play
- Rusty Rackets
- Abilities Tennis (Intellectual Disabilities)
- Play with the Dogs
- Free Coaching Clinics
- Special Olympics
- Free High School Tournament
- Used Shoe Drive and Expanded Ball Recycling Program
Our full calendar is in the works and will be posted at AVLtennis.com. If you're interested in volunteering for any events or making a financial donation, we'd be thrilled. Shoot me an email by clicking here.
With Black History Month upon us, let's take a moment to recognize Arthur Ashe. He remains the only Black man to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the US Open, or Australian Open. Maybe more importantly, Ashe founded the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) program which offers free tennis and education programming to hundreds of thousands of under-resourced youth each year. The mission of the ATA β to Grow the Game for ALL β follows this philosophy as we bring tennis to those in our community who would not otherwise be exposed to the game.
ο»ΏI'm a lucky gal to be a part of the ATA and the wonderful WNC tennis community. I played tennis in high school (thanks to Coach Mott at Owen High School!), but life took over and I didn't pick up a racquet again for 36 years! It's never too soon or too late to play our great game, or to cheer from the sidelines.
Warmly β
