Reunification Discernment Committee

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the first round of listening sessions facilitated by the Reunification Discernment Committee. Hearing your dreams and concerns was very valuable to the committee.

If you were unable to join one of the listening sessions or you thought of something you wanted to share with the committee and forgot to, please send those comments to the committee. You can reach them through the contact us form on the website or you can email them. As a reminder, the questions discussed are below.

  1. What possibilities do you see for collaboration?
  2. What hopes/dreams do you have for the Episcopal Church in Indiana?
  3. What concerns do you bring to this process?
  4. What do you feel you need to know, or our dioceses need to know in this discernment regarding reunification?

As more information becomes available, it will be posted to the Reunification Discernment Committee website and social media (Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram). We will also share update you through the diocesan newsletter.

Communion by Extension in EDNIN

In the video above, Bishop Doug Sparks introduces to the diocese a new document titled, Communion by Extension in the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana.

The purpose is to:

  1. Sustain the witness and Eucharistic charism of Episcopal congregations when the frequency of the presence of a priest to celebrate the Eucharist is not regular.
  2. Develop a fuller understanding in the congregation about the Eucharist and the difference between celebrating Eucharist and receiving Communion.
  3. Deepen a congregation’s link to and understanding of the priesthood.
  4. Engage a conversation about other aspects of priesthood (besides sacramental) that are missing from the life of a congregation that does not have a priest in residence or visiting on a regular basis.

Commemoration of Fr. Petit

Date: February 9

Time: 12 p.m. (EST)

Where: St Thomas Episcopal Church—Santo Tomás Iglesia Episcopal, Plymouth

The Rev. Bernadette Hartshough, rector of St Thomas Episcopal Church—Santo Tomás Iglesia Episcopal, invites you to a service of Morning Prayer at 12 p.m. on Friday, February 9, in honor of the Twin Lakes Potawatomi and their last missionary, Fr. Benjamin Marie Petit. The service marks the 185th anniversary of Fr. Petit’s death in St. Louis, on February 10, 1839, on his way back to Indiana after having accompanied his people on the Trail of Death march to Kansas. The preacher will be the Very Rev. John Houghton, Ph.D., Vice President of the Culver Historical Society and a director of Wythougan Valley Preservation, whose pioneer ancestors knew Chief Menominee and Fr. Petit. A light lunch will be served in the Parish Hall after the service. Clergy are welcome to vest in cassock, surplice, and tippet (and hood, if you like) and be seated in the choir stalls.

Safe Church Training

As you may know, Safe Church Training is vital in keeping our programs and activities safe for all. This training is mandatory for anyone working with children or vulnerable adults, for all paid staff, anyone in charge of a program or activity and for all vestry members. Everyone should be holding annual meetings by the middle of February. During those annual meetings you may be electing new vestry members, so we want to provide those vestry members or anyone else that needs it with the opportunity to

complete this important training. Because the training will be offered on two different days, hopefully there will be a time and date that works for you. We will need to limit these training sessions to 25 participants to make them more manageable. Of course, we also are happy to consult with any clergy in the diocese who are interested in leading training on their own.

Reminder: If you have lay people in your congregations that have taken the in-person training within the last three years, they will only need to complete a refresher course online to stay current. The online refresher course is now available on the Praesidium Academy website. If you didn't receive an invitation to sign into this website you will need to contact us for assistance.

The registration links for the different dates are below. Participants must register for these training sessions no later than the day before each date. Please send this information on to anyone that may need the training.
