A Conversation with Local Artist,

Isaiah Marcotte

By Crystal Hammerschmidt

Salina Arts & Humanities

Local filmmaker Isaiah Marcotte shared insights about his creative process leading up to a local film event at the Salina Art Center Cinema tomorrow evening, January 18.

Q: What first got you into filmmaking?

A: My sister introduced my dad’s camcorder to me at the age of eight. Since then, I have never been able to put it down.

Q: Who are your most important artistic influences?

A: Georges Méliès, Dziga Vertov, Hermann Hesse and Alan Watts

Q: What motivates you to create?

A: I do not know; it will not go away, and I am possessed. If I ever stopped, I would get really depressed.

Q: What is a challenge you are facing in your creative work?

A: Time and resources. If you are not making money doing it, then you are working another job to fund your obsession.

Q: How can people support local Kansas Filmmakers?

A: By sharing their content and going to as many screenings as they can! Buying their merch and, if so inclined, helping them get the right social connections that they need to elevate their career forward.

The details of a local event that readers can support are below:

Date: January 18, 2024

Featured artists: Isaiah Marcotte & Caleb Voyles, with music by Jonathan Carter Hess

Isaiah shared that this show includes an 18-minute showreel of trailers, films of the past, and films to come, as well as two shorts before their feature presentation. He hopes the audience enjoys revisiting old projects and seeing their latest work, nicely wrapped in an evening's worth of entertainment. He is looking forward to seeing everyone there!
