Know Your Como History: Church of Art - Part II
|
By Laura Oyen
Marjorie Moody and Mike Zaccardi have lived in the immersive space of what was originally the Lake Park Baptist Church since 1993. This converted church became both their home and their work space for the past 30 years.
The original building permit for 1220 Pascal was pulled in October of 1921 for the owner, St. Paul Baptist Union. Axel Olson did $4,500 in building work through that winter. The next major work on the building occurred in 1931 by Rundquist and Bjork contractors who listed the owner as Lake Park Baptist Church. For the decade in between, the basement may have been used for services while funds were raised to build the full structure. The 1981 Historic Sites Survey noted this simple building was a “mildly Gothic revival” red brick church “with a pointed arched window in the main gable and segmented arched windows along side aisles”; in 1981 the building was known as the Agora Community Center. 2023 Como Curb Cleanup RESULTS
Back in October and November we partnered with the Capitol Region Watershed District to lead the Como Curb Cleanup. Then in December we asked participants to report their cleaning efforts. - Total responding participants: 77
- Total feet cleaned: 37,053ft
- Number of miles cleaned: 7.0
- Equivalent football field lengths cleaned: 124
- Equivalent number of times around Como Lake cleaned: 4.1
-
Number of times to the moon and back cleaned: 0.00001466721
- Phosphorus estimated in 1ft of curb: 0.0003125
- Total lbs. of phosphorus prevented from reaching Como Lake: 11.58 lbs
- Pounds of curly leaf pond weed this phosphorus amount could produce: 5.790lbs!
- Tons it could have produced:2.89t
*If you participated and didn't report your results we can still add to these numbers in our records.
For those who have asked about the Curb Cleanup yard signs, our hope is that you have a place in your garage to hang on to them for next year. If it's a burden for you, you can leave it outside our office door at the Como Streetcar Station and we will find a new lawn for it next year!

You can find the list of available seeds here and the order form here.
Options for getting these seeds include having MN SEED mail them to you for free within the Capitol Region Watershed District boundaries or picking up near Lake Como.
Quantities are limited to 5 packets per person. The form will close when they run out.
Here is a link to their favorite Winter Sowing Handout so you can plant these seeds over the winter and have optimal success. Let them know if you have any questions. Thanks for growing native plants and being part of the MN SEED Project!

Why Are The Street Lights Out or Dark? Wire Theft
We've all experienced how dark things have been lately, especially now that night comes so early. Below is an excerpt from St. Paul Public Works webpage on the issue. Please help by reporting suspicious activity when you see it.
In the recent years the City of Saint Paul has experienced significant and reoccurring theft of the wire from street light fixtures both in City right of way and parks. While this issue is not unique for other cities and municipalities across the nation, Saint Paul has seen an increase in wire theft since early 2021.
If residents notice that the street lights are "on" during daytime hours, please know that this is intentional. The energized lights helps deter, but not prevent, wire theft.
City staff has put additional resources to repair and replace street lights that have been damaged due to wire theft, only to have the new wire stolen again within a matter of hours. More areas of Saint Paul remain dark as we cannot repair and replace the wire as fast as it is being stolen.
We need the support of residents and businesses to stop street light wire theft!
Wire theft is not random, but often organized and coordinated with people even wearing vests and putting out cones. If you see anyone “working” on street lights during any time of the day or night and there is a not a City of Saint Paul vehicle near the site, please report the location and activity to the Saint Paul Police Department at 651-291-1111. Do not approach the “workers.”
To report any street lights that are out or damaged, please report the location through the online form.

Ramsey County Environmental Resources
How to dispose of holiday wrapping
Packages, boxes, bags, cards - the holidays can be filled with single-use items. Make sure you know how to properly dispose of them.
Think reuse first: What can you use again instead of throwing away? Save bows, gift bags and tissue paper that can be reused. Think of creative ways to package gifts that don’t require new materials.
Holiday cards: Cards and envelopes made of only paper should be recycled. Cards with foil, glitter, ribbons or velvet are not recyclable and should be placed in the trash.
Cards that light up or play music do not belong in the trash because they contain batteries. Bring them to Ramsey County’s household hazardous waste collection site for free.
Wrapping paper: Put wrapping paper in the trash. Do not put it in your recycling bin because it does not sort easily at the recycling facility and may contain materials that cannot be recycled. Do not compost because wrapping paper can contain inks/dyes, plastic, foil and tape -- all of which harm the composting process.
Find disposal options for other items, including cardboard boxes, real and artificial trees and string lights on the county's A to Z Recycling & Disposal Guide.
| |
Recycle Smart: Small electronics & batteries
Recycle Smart by taking your batteries to a Household Hazardous Waste drop-off site. Keep batteries out of your recycling and garbage containers. These items can damage equipment, harm workers and can start fires in trucks or recycling facilities.
Find drop off locations at www.RamseyRecycles.com/HHW.
