39th Street Calming Project is Completed

2010-2024
Over 1,000 people cross 39th Street west of Canterbury, on any given day. At the busiest times, over 200 may cross in a single hour.
Approximately 8,000 cars pass through this portion of 39th Street on any given day.

2014-2024
The Broadview owners (Tom Knoche and Nina Knoche) came to TCNA in 2014 with the vision and plan that would make 39th Street safer for residents and the median an attractive part of the neighborhood. TCNA approved the Calming Plan developed by the Broadview. This plan, submitted to the Baltimore City transportation department, included speed 'tables', street markings, crosswalks, and bump outs between University Parkway and the Canterbury Rd roundabout. Work was completed Fall 2024.
| |
Special thanks to Tom and Nina Knoche who made this happen. The Broadview has invested nearly $100,000 in this calming project and survived all the hurdles over the years that might have happened. This would never have succeeded without their continued effort every month for years!
|
TNCA has donated $1000 and board members have donated an additional $1000 so far. There is still a shortfall of around $30,000 that will need to be closed. If you would like to donate to this important project, please send a check made payable to the TCNA (with the notation on the comments line “39th Street Project”) and mail it to PO Box 26223, Baltimore 21210. Any amount, large or small, will be greatly appreciated. It will go directly to help pay for these improvements in our neighborhood.

8 speed humps installed with 4 on each side of the street.
2 new ADA sidewalks were added for neighbors to cross this section of University Parkway
Striping was done to show parking lanes and crosswalks.
Dozens of Tuscany-Canterbury neighbors helped with the planting of 45 containers along 39th Street. The Broadview supplied the planters and the plants and will continue to water and maintain the planters in the future. The Broadview will soon announce an Adopt-a-Pot program for neighbors to volunteer to maintain the plants in one or more pots by watering them and reporting plants that have died and need to be replaced. Information about the program will be in the November TCNA Newsletter.
The purpose of the planters is another way to slow down traffic on 39th Street. and provide a more neighborhood-friendly area.
2017
The area between the Hopkins Deli and the Broadview was paved and tables and chairs were provided for the neighborhood to use. The Broadview paid for this work and maintains the area.
| | |
2015
The Broadview presented the Calming Plan to TCNA and it was approved. The Broadview obtained a MOU with the city to maintain the median between the roundabout and University Parkway.
| |
The Broadview and TCNA planted perennials in the median near University Parkway to prevent people from dangerously crossing the 39th Street in that area.
The Broadview continues to maintain the median by mowing the grass removing dead trees and planting new ones.

2010-2014
For years TCNA tried to improve 39th Street with the City. After decades of suggestions, the City finally agreed to install the roundabout at 39th Street and Canterbury Road. Prior to the roundabout there were only stop signs on Canterbury for people and cars to cross 39th Street.

|
Many people worked together to make 39th Street calmer in the past 15 years.. Special thanks to everyone who helped.
