Heart of Virginia Council’s highest volunteer recognition, the Silver Beaver Award, will be awarded to five highly deserving Scouters who have made a huge impact in the lives of youth through their hard work, self-sacrifice, and years of dedicated service. Dominion Energy Plaza and the Ideal Scout

Have you seen the new Dominion Energy Plaza at the Heart of Virginia Council (HOVC) Leadership Center? Our new plaza features a bronze replica of “The Ideal Scout,” a very famous statue sculpted by R. Tait McKenzie. The original statue stood outside the Cradle of Liberty Council in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, until 2013. Replicas can be found at Council’s across the country, now including ours! January District Roundtables

District Roundtable is a monthly program offered by districts that give leaders hands-on experience and provides a forum for leaders to offer and receive help from their fellow Scouters. Each District offers special supplemental training for volunteers at the beginning of the month.

Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training At Winter Camp

The South of the James Training Team is offering Scoutmaster Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training on January 13th during Winter Camp at T. Brady Saunders for registered leaders throughout the Heart of Virginia Council. This training is required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters.  The cost is FREE and includes water, light refreshments, and "Trained" patches for leaders who have completed all training requirements for their registered position.

Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Counselor Orientation

The HOVC Advancement Committee is pleased to offer Orientation sessions, for those selected by their units, to be Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Counselors. Please remember that we need each Troop to have at least one designated Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Counselor in order to fulfill the objectives of the badge. Unit leaders and Committees, think about who is best suited to guide your scouts, on this personal journey. Join us on Sunday, January 21st, 2024 at the Leadership Center.

Commissioner College: February 3rd, 2024

If you have just completed a tour as a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, or any other adult Scouter position and want to continue to service Scouting in a different capacity, consider becoming a Unit Commissioner. A Unit Commissioner normally supports three units and draws on your experiences to help new leaders provide the Scouting program to their unit. Registration is open!

IOLS Training for Troop Leaders: March 9th - 10th, 2024

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) gives Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters the practical knowledge they need to help Scouts to safely learn outdoor skills. Along with Scoutmaster Specifics, this course is required of all direct contact leaders registered in Scouts BSA Troops in order to be considered "Trained." Come get trained with us March 9th - 10th, 2024 at Camp T. Brady Saunders.

BALOO Training for Cub Scout Leaders: March 9th - 10th, 2024

Every Cub Scout deserves a trained leader! Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program, with one part completed online and the other in-person. Your Pack MUST have at least ONE BALOO trained adult leader in attendance at all Pack overnighters. The next opportunity is March 9th - 10th, 2024 at Camp T. Brady Saunders.

Wood Badge: Spring 2024

Wood Badge is the ultimate leadership training program of the BSA. Reflecting the best of nearly a century of Scouting experience and tradition, Wood Badge draws upon current leadership models used to train leaders in organizations throughout the world. Through hands-on activities, learning experiences, and games, leadership models are brought to life. Our next Wood Badge course takes place over two weekends at Cub Adventure Camp. Join us April 12th - 14th and April 27th - 28th, 2024!

Trainer's EDGE: May 18th, 2024

Trainer's EDGE helps participants to develop the skills of leaders and trainers. It focuses on improving the participant’s leadership, communication and training skills. The Trainer’s Edge is the required train-the-trainer course for Wood Badge, Commissioners’ College, NYLT staff and all other BSA training courses. Hazardous Weather Training

Numerous Scouting programs are conducted in the great outdoors, and the Hazardous Weather training module is dedicated to the effective management of weather-related risks for our Scouting community. It offers a comprehensive discussion on the significance of understanding the risks associated with our outdoor classroom, with a particular focus on three critical areas: lightning safety, managing heat and hydration, and preventing hypothermia.

Cub Scout Program Changes: Effective June 1st, 2024

The Cub Scout program is set to undergo updates for the 2024-25 program year, following years of effort by the National Cub Scouting Committee. Identified through feedback from over 23,000 parents and leaders, the updates aim to enhance the program's simplicity. After a year of socializing these improvements and garnering overwhelming support, the National Cub Scout Committee is officially unveiling the changes, which will become effective on June 1st, 2024!

The National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) scholarship application window opens on December 1st, 2023 and closes January 31st, 2024. Scholarships are awarded to Eagle Scouts who have shown active participation in school, Scouting activities, and community service, and who demonstrate they understand the fundamentals of service to community, and Scouting. Scouts BSA Rank and Merit Badge Updates as of January 1, 2024

As part of continuous improvements, changes have been made to rank and merit badge requirements. A list of those changes that will take effect on January 1, 2024, can be found using the link below and includes an update to Eagle Palms, the Cyberchip, and merit badges with significant and minor changes. The Merit Badges page on the National website and Scoutbook will be updated accordingly.

James River District Klondike Derby: February 9th - 11th, 2024

The James River District is hosting their annual Klondike Derby in February. This event is open to Cub Scouts, Webelos and AOLs, Scouts BSA, and Venture Crews. Challenges will be program- and age- appropriate. Scouts BSA and Venturers will use orienteering skills to navigate from station to station. A Leader Guide and registration will be available soon. Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge: Two Opportunities

Those who service automobiles must understand each principle, and how these principles interact to provide smooth, efficient performance. National Youth Leadership Training: June 9th - 15th, 2024

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a week-long course, held at Cub Adventure Camp, that focuses on leadership development. It is the youth-led version of Wood Badge. Graduates learn leadership through proven training techniques and methods tuned for the youth of today. NYLT is “Fun with a Purpose” using games and hands-on experience to teach relevant skills! Learn the concepts of what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW, and what a leader must DO.

Provisional Troop 3 at Summer Camp

Weekend Experiences at T. Brady Saunders

Our Weekend Experience at T. Brady Saunders opens parts of camp for weekend use! Weekend primitive camping opportunities are available at S. Douglas Fleet from August through May, based on availability. We offer Troops the opportunity to customize a program specifically tailored for their Scouts. Come out for nature, fishing, shooting, STEM, and more. We even have canoes available for rent!

Brick Program

A great way to honor your Eagle Scout is to sponsor a personally engraved Eagle Brick. The cost is $200 per brick which includes engraving of up to eighteen characters per line (letters, space and punctuation) with a maximum of two lines. 2024 Eagle Challenge Brick orders are due Friday, July 12th, 2024.
