GIVING

by Jo Strausz Rosen

The purpose of giving Tzedakah is to sanctify ourselves and to help us lead more elevated and spiritual lives. Giving Tzedakah provides for someone else’s physical needs. It has been said, we are measured not so much by what we buy, but by what we give.  One doesn’t need to say a blessing before the mitzvah of giving Tzedakah. But please know this… Every time a letter with a check enclosed arrives on my desk, or an email dings on my computer indicating a gift has been received from a stock transfer or designation from a Philanthropic fund, I say a blessing to Gd on your behalf.

FRIENDS

Well, the weather outside has been a little frightful. But the warmth inside Jewish Senior Life is so delightful. And it is the most wonderful time of the year to become a JSL volunteer! So come on over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s (and grandfather’s) house, in Oak Park or West Bloomfield and help us make everyone’s days merry and bright!

There are lots of opportunities to provide warmth and cheer here. Everyone loves having visitors, seeing new faces and getting to do new activities (as well as old favorites). These are some of the areas where we need volunteers:

Bingo

Bistro/Cafe

Prentis Pantry

Discussion Groups and Lectures

Movie Facilitator

Games

Arts & Crafts / Painting

Floral Arranging

Knitting

Beading

Men’s Clubs

Walking with Residents

Friendly Visits

Dining Room

Boutiques

Check out the volunteer page for details on these and more. Or call / email me at 248-592-5062 /

brobinson@jslmi.org. And if you have a special interest or expertise you don’t see on here, we’ll be happy to work with you to share it with the JSL community.

It’s been a while since we published “Don’t Write Me Off!” but I was just flipping through it and I was reminded again that it was not only an admirable effort on the part of the older adult writers, but they really shared some wonderful stories, and in a highly readable and entertaining way. I know I’m biased, but I think everyone would enjoy it! It’s available on Amazon, in the boutique, on our website and at the front desks at Prentis and Teitel.

Pants!

There are new pants in the boutique and more coming. Black, camel, polka dotted, leggings – we gotcha covered! And lots of cozy sweaters and jackets to go with them! Come visit us:

Sharon’s boutique M-F 11am – 2pm

Meer boutique M-F 1 – 3pm and Wednesday 11am – 3pm

(Both boutiques will be closed December 25 and January 1)

MUSIC

The Klezmer Concert at Meer Apartments had a musical impact on the residents last week. They especially enjoyed the sounds of master violinist, Henrik Karapetyan, who plays for the Detroit Opera House.

Henrik told us, “I had the pleasure of experiencing, once again, JSL's incredible sense of camaraderie and love. The audience is part of creating the experience. So much positive energy around me is a most rewarding aspect of my work," he added.

HENRY FORD HISTORY

Eight energized Fleischman memory care residents, along with six devoted staff, took a trip down historical memory lane at Dearborn's Henry Ford Museum.

Susan Bindes, Shirley Kleiman, Anita Lampcov, Barbara Levin, Mildred Levy, Paula Polan, Sondra Sheine and Cherie Kohl Warsaw rode the bus together to view the many exhibits featuring American ingenuity and progress.

Life Enrichment Director, Jurgita Atanaskovski, said, “Residents loved the presidential limousines, the special Nelson Mandela exhibit, and all the old cars. I loved them too!”

Shirley proclaimed, "This cannot be described in words, so wonderful! I have not seen this before and it is great!" Barbara echoed her feelings about the adventure, saying, "I am enjoying this, I like being here! I am having so much fun." Pictures worth 1000 words tell this story of exciting adventures out of the building.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

POTATOES AGAIN?

Leftover potatoes after a week of Latkes? Try using these in soup. We suggest people substitute yogurt instead of half and half to make a healthier and zestier version.

DECEMBER FUN FACT

In 2004, a biologist confirmed the last sighting of a real Michigan wolverine, about 200 years after the species was last seen in the state.

Don’t Wait for Redemption -

Redemption is Waiting for You

According to all opinions we are living in unprecedented times. “Redemption” is a buzz word for the religious and for the secular, for the Jews and for the non-Jews. Redemption means to be redeemed from the shackles which the surrounding world places upon us and those that we place on ourselves.

Redemption is an era, a period, and a phase. It is not merely a gift that comes to us without exertion. It requires much inner work. Redemption means to break through the attitudes of doubt, fear and misery to begin to see life in a whole new light. Redemption can only happen when we realign ourselves with the perfect way G-d originally created our world.

Note the following:

“Redeem” is the root word of “redemption.” Split the word “Redeem” and you get “Re-Deem.”

“Redemption” is about re-deeming everything you see, hear and encounter. Re-deem affords you the opportunity to relook, to revisit, to reexamine, to reassess and to reevaluate. Perhaps you will find the silver lining, the good, the moral, the lesson and the inspiration.

We can now more fully appreciate the teaching of the saintly Baal Shem Tov urging us during these last moments in exile to take heed of our two most vital senses, namely our eyes and our ears. We must scrutinize everything we see and hear. Only then are we to sift the good and the positive.

If G-d brought a situation, a setting, or a human being into this world, it must possess at least one redeeming factor.

Let us search for the spark of goodness and kindness in our fellow man and in the many encounters we experience daily.

So, when you think of redemption, think of your responsibility and privilege to “Re-deem” the world around you and that which you see and hear.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
