President's Message
Dr. Priscilla Tu
Hi AOASM Family!
I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend – I’m sad to see summer (and my vacation time) come to an end. However, I’m excited for the start of football season! I’m sure many of you are happy your kids are back in school!
Notable Updates: While it may seem like not a lot is happening right now, we have had many discussions with editors and publishers for different textbook publications and have members hard at work on these. Dr. Brett DeGooyer is preparing to head to Germany for another SportsOsteopathy™ course – we will look forward to stories and pictures from his trip.
Many members are also gearing up to present at OMED. Dr. Mark Rogers has put together a great lineup of lectures for us. Again, if you haven’t already, please register for the OMED conference (under AOASM/sports medicine) – details below. We hope to see you all there! If you come, please find Dr. Anne Marie Zeller – you just may be highlighted in our social media posts and/or our website!

Sporting Fun: Last month, I talked about American football – this month, we will explore the sport all but nine countries (including the US) call “football”. Here are some fun facts about the game we know as “soccer”:
1. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, watched by 4 billion fans and played by more than 240 million people in over 200 countries.
2. The soccer ball is actually slightly oval in shape, but the checkered pattern (32 panels representing each country in Europe) gives the illusion of a perfect sphere.
3. Soccer was illegal in Mississippi until 1991!
4. Talk about speed! The fastest:
a. Recorded goal = 2.8 seconds by Ricardo Olivera.
b. World Cup goal = 11 seconds by Hakan Sukur.
c. Red card given = 2 seconds to Lee Todd when he swore about the loudness of the whistle to start the match.
d. Red card given in a World Cup = 56 seconds to Jose Batista in 1986.
5. Highest numbers – the most:
a. Hosts for a World Cup = 2 when South Korea and Japan hosted the 2002 World Cup; only one country hosted the other World Cups.
b. Red cards given = 36 in a 5th tier game in Argentina, dismissing every player, substitute, and coach.
c. Fans at a single match = 199,854 fans watched Brazil v Uruguay in 1950 World Cup.
d. Fans attending the World Cup = 3,587,538 when US hosted in 1994 – average of 68,991 fans at each game.
e. Goals scored in a single season = 50 by Lionel Messi of Barcelona. He is also the highest paid player of all time, making over $100 million/year.
f. Goals in a single World Cup match = 5 by Oleg Salenko.
g. Babies born = Germany with a baby boom of about 30% nine months after hosting the 2006 World Cup. Many other countries experience a boom but Germany’s was the largest.
On that note, I will sign off – hope to see you all in Orlando next month!
