President's Message

Dr. Priscilla Tu

Hi AOASM Family!

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend – I’m sad to see summer (and my vacation time) come to an end. However, I’m excited for the start of football season! I’m sure many of you are happy your kids are back in school!

Notable Updates: While it may seem like not a lot is happening right now, we have had many discussions with editors and publishers for different textbook publications and have members hard at work on these. Dr. Brett DeGooyer is preparing to head to Germany for another SportsOsteopathy™ course – we will look forward to stories and pictures from his trip.

Many members are also gearing up to present at OMED. Dr. Mark Rogers has put together a great lineup of lectures for us. Again, if you haven’t already, please register for the OMED conference (under AOASM/sports medicine) – details below. We hope to see you all there! If you come, please find Dr. Anne Marie Zeller – you just may be highlighted in our social media posts and/or our website!

Committee Highlight: Your Board of Directors created a committee to document the history of AOASM. Chair Dr. Stephanie Aldret says:

Sporting Fun: Last month, I talked about American football – this month, we will explore the sport all but nine countries (including the US) call “football”. Here are some fun facts about the game we know as “soccer”:

1.   Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, watched by 4 billion fans and played by more than 240 million people in over 200 countries.

2.   The soccer ball is actually slightly oval in shape, but the checkered pattern (32 panels representing each country in Europe) gives the illusion of a perfect sphere.

3.   Soccer was illegal in Mississippi until 1991!

4.   Talk about speed! The fastest:

a.   Recorded goal = 2.8 seconds by Ricardo Olivera.

b.   World Cup goal = 11 seconds by Hakan Sukur.

c.    Red card given = 2 seconds to Lee Todd when he swore about the loudness of the whistle to start the match.

d.   Red card given in a World Cup = 56 seconds to Jose Batista in 1986.

5.   Highest numbers – the most:

a.   Hosts for a World Cup = 2 when South Korea and Japan hosted the 2002 World Cup; only one country hosted the other World Cups.

b.   Red cards given = 36 in a 5th tier game in Argentina, dismissing every player, substitute, and coach.

c.    Fans at a single match = 199,854 fans watched Brazil v Uruguay in 1950 World Cup.

d.   Fans attending the World Cup = 3,587,538 when US hosted in 1994 – average of 68,991 fans at each game.

e.   Goals scored in a single season = 50 by Lionel Messi of Barcelona. He is also the highest paid player of all time, making over $100 million/year.

f.     Goals in a single World Cup match = 5 by Oleg Salenko.

g.   Babies born = Germany with a baby boom of about 30% nine months after hosting the 2006 World Cup. Many other countries experience a boom but Germany’s was the largest.

On that note, I will sign off – hope to see you all in Orlando next month!

SAOASM Update and Upcoming Events

Written by: Annemarie Beran, SAOASM National Chair

Hello SAOASM! Thank you to everyone who participated in our most recent webinar. We are excited to continue this series with great turnout thus far. Please be on the lookout for information on next month’s webinar!

We would like to highlight two recent Chapter events –

VCOM-Auburn:

“On August 13, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Auburn campus hosted a spine boarding and intubation workshop sponsored by the American Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine. VCOM-Auburn faculty members: Jos, Edison DO; Brett Sprouse, DO; Bhavesh Joshi, DO; Michael Goodlett, MD; Shane Bealer, DO (sports medicine fellow); and Ashley Henning, DO (sports medicine fellow); taught students proper spine boarding and intubation techniques. At the event, VCOM-Auburn students and faculty worked with fellows from the Andrews Institute for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, athletic training faculty, and students at Tuskegee University to learn vital techniques in the field of sports medicine. This provided a unique experience for VCOM-Auburn students to receive hands-on training while collaborating with multiple disciplines in sports medicine under the guidance of the VCOM faculty.”

Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine:

“DMU Sports Medicine Club dueled it out at their annual Back-to-School(-ish) Dodgeball Tournament! What better way to blow off that medical school steam than by taking it out on our peers or that one guy who always humble brags about his exam scores?”

To all our Chapters, keep up the excellent work – and please continue to share events or other important information from your club.

We are looking forward to the upcoming OMED Conference in Orlando! Please feel free to reach out with any questions or suggestions.

Registration Open for 2023 Advanced Team Physician Course

The Advanced Team Physician Course (ATPC) will prove valuable to any team physician, certified athletic trainer, physical therapist, or coach concerned with the management and prevention of injuries to the team athlete.

The ATPC is a collaborative effort between AMSSM and ACSM, is co-sponsored by AOASM and AOSSM, and takes place from December 6-8, at the Hyatt Regency in Salt Lake City, UT. This in-person activity is designed to provide up-to-date information on the evaluation and treatment of medical illnesses and musculoskeletal injuries occurring in competitive and recreational athletes.

While the emphasis will be on athletes participating in team sports, many topics will be applicable to competitors in individual sports. The format features lectures, case presentations, panel discussions, question-and-answer sessions, as well as informal discussions with the faculty. AMSSM Second Vice President Carly Day, MD, FAMSSM, is serving as the Program Chair and is one of two AMSSM Representatives on the Program Planning Committee, along with Jonathan Finnoff, DO, FAMSSM. They will be joined by several other AMSSM members presenting at the conference.

Explore the Preliminary Brochure for more details.

The advance registration deadline for the ATPC is November 21. After this date, on-site registration will become available on the morning of December 6 before the course begins.
