Throughout this week, campus-wide we celebrated the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. hosting special assemblies for students.
MLK Student Assemblies
Our Middle School and Upper School students experienced our dynamic keynote speaker, Ashley Cornelius, the 6th Poet Laureate of the Pikes Peak Region. Ashley, pictured above, shared two original poems during her keynote, Defy Silence and Revolutionary Love. She opened up with Defy Silence, which addresses the stereotype that Black people are loud and reframes being loud as a beautiful celebration of survival and love. She urges others to be loud and to speak up against injustice. Ashley shared her relationship to Martin Luther King, Jr.,and his influence on seeing a Black leader as a young Black girl growing up in Colorado Springs. Ashley talked about justice and that education is an aspect of justice that doesn’t have to come as a result of previous harm. She shared the 6 principles of Kingian nonviolence and addressed how courageous and brave it is to use nonviolence as action against injustice. She encouraged the students to use their light to encourage others to shine and disrupt the darkness. Ashley closed with her poem Revolutionary Love where she describes a world of love, connection, healing, and community. She closed the event with affirmations repeated by the students and shared how excited she is for all they will accomplish in their lives.
This morning, our Lower School held a student-run assembly with music, poems, presentations, and speeches about Dr. King. We are so excited to have this community-wide energy as we head into February celebrating Black History Month.

Kodiak families, we'd love to get your thoughts about auxiliary programming as we move forward to plan for next year. We are gathering data regarding our programs to help inform supplemental fees for the short and long-term sustainability of CSS. We would like to collect parent and guardian feedback in this survey below. The survey will remain open until Friday, January 19 at 5:00 p.m.
