January 2024

Welcome to the new year

Happy New Year! One thing I’ve always loved about school is the promise of a fresh start each term; this is something I cherish even now. Not only does the new year afford us an opportunity to reflect, the start of a new term also allows us to perhaps shed what wasn’t working and to start anew.

However, as we step into a new term, the challenges we’re grappling with may seem unchanged. For example, new innovations in AI are changing the face of higher education and the nature of our work. May we be refreshed by the promise of a new year and reminded that with common challenges brings opportunities to innovate, inspire, and impact the lives of our learners – not in silos, but together in community, fueled by our shared passion for excellence in teaching and learning.

Here's to a year of growth, collaboration, and community!

EdTech RoundUp

Here are a few tips & tricks to help you get started with the Spring 2024 Semester:

eLearn

We recommend:

  • Setup your Gradebook early in the semester so you are ready for assessments to be calculated properly. Your gradebook should be setup based on the evaluation profile that is in your course outline.
  • Change your course format from Weekly format to Onetopic (Tabbed) format. This will change the layout from one long list to single pages.
  • Hide the tabs so that they don't compete with the navigation on the left and make sure that hidden sections aren't visible to students.
  • Attach a Rubric to submitted assignments – this will make it easier for you to grade the assignment and students will see clearly how they are being evaluated

Do you want incorporate more video into your course?

  • Remember all faculty and students have access to our Kaltura video streaming service - CapU Video and it is integrated with elearn. Avoid students uploading videos directly to elearn.
  • Also, if you would like to use video for assessment there is a Kaltura Media Assignment

If you would like to explore all or any of these strategies please feel free to book a time with Frank:
