Your Budget Friendly Recipe for December: Lazy Cabbage Rolls are a holiday season classic!

Contributors: Dana Mandryk Nursing Student Home for the Summer and Caroline Le Clair, Registered Dietitian and Wellness Facilitator with the Interlake-Eastern RHA

You never slaw this coming!

The time around the holidays always reminds us of our favourite recipes as well as our favourite memories making these recipes (or at least it does for me). Usually there is one person in the family who makes a certain recipe the best and no one can replicate it. This is a delicious budget friendly alternative to traditional cabbage rolls (because we all have somebody who makes them like nobody else can). Cabbage is full of fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamins C, A, and K.

Food Banks In Our Region

Source: Interlake-Eastern RHA

If you are in need, there are local food banks in our region that may be able to help.

If you are able to give, consider contacting your local food bank to see how they would like to receive donations (cash donations or product donations). Different food banks may have different protocols in place at this time. Your local grocery stores may also be taking food bank donations.

Please call your local food bank for more details since their procedures may be different right now.

Gift Giving Tips to Save Money

Contributors: Bonnie Stefansson, Wellness Facilitator with the Interlake-Eastern RHA

What does gift-giving mean to you? Do you feel obligated to spend a certain amount on gifts? Be honest with yourself and think about why you are buying presents before thinking about what you will buy and how much you will spend.

Setting a budget and sticking to it is the next step in saving money during the holidays. Be sure to include all the various expenses that December brings; gifts, food, entertaining, parties, eating-out, potlucks (and rising food costs) and more. Rein in other spending! You might have to spend less in other budget categories to make up for extra spending on Christmas related bills.

Track your overall spending as you go, so you don’t end up overspending and ruining this month’s and next month’s budget!

Masks Strongly Recommended

Medical masks are now still available to those who choose to wear them but it is no longer mandatory for people to enter Interlake-Eastern RHA facilities with masks. Some areas of our facilities will still require masks, especially in areas where people are immunocompromised. You may also see mandatory mask wearing return in the event that a facility is experiencing an outbreak. Members of the public are encouraged to request their care providers to wear masks when caring for them which reflects our mask friendly approach. Read more from Sharedhealthmb.

Have you tested positive for COVID-19?

If your rapid antigen test is positive for #COVID19, or you don't take a test but have symptoms, you should isolate for 5 days after your symptoms start and until you don't have a fever & your other symptoms have been improving for 24 hours. Click here to learn more.

Vaccine Resources

Source: Province of Manitoba | Vaccination and Eligibility (gov.mb.ca)

Beginning in the fall of 2023 for those previously vaccinated against COVID-19, Health Canada recommends a dose of the new formulation of COVID-19 vaccine for individuals age 6 months and over if it has been at least 6 months from the previous COVID-19 vaccine dose or known SARS-CoV-2 infection (whichever is later).

All people in Manitoba aged 6 months and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccination.

The vaccine is also available from medical clinics, pharmacies and other locations. Use the Vaccine Finder to find a convenient location. You can make your vaccine appointment at some sites online or by calling 1-844-626-8222.
