“Lord, to whom shall we go, you have the words of eternal life."
- John 6:68
We live in a world where lots of words are spoken from the mouths of many people. Everyone seems to have an idea. Eat this and you will lose weight. Wear that and you will suddenly fit in the ‘cool’ crowd. Say this, and you have 100,000 ‘followers.’ Jesus speaks too.
In sixth chapter of John, Jesus had been teaching about life through him saying, “The Spirit gives life, the flesh counts for nothing.” Not exactly crowd-pleasing words to self-consumed people. Jesus has not only been using words to teach but he has also been feeding everyone food. Thousands were fed with a handful of fish and bread and his followers were astonished. But when the food runs out, Jesus is no longer ‘useful.’ In perhaps the saddest verse in all of scripture, John 6:66, his followers turn their backs and walk away. Yes, thousands were fed, and now thousands walk away from the Messiah! Jesus then turns to the disciples and asks, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Peter answers,
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
Words of life, eternal life, come from only one mouth - the mouth of Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns over all of eternity. Sunday, we conclude our sermon series with UNSHAKEABLE LIFE. Thanks be to God for His words.
See you Sunday - I can’t wait!
