Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

September 11 - September 15, 2023

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for current information on travel conditions and work zones in Virginia. All construction-related work and closures are subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Single right lane closures on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for drainage, embankment, and bridge work.


Monday, September 11, through Friday, September 15, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closures on northbound I-495 throughout the project corridor for traffic management.


Monday, September 11, through Friday, September 15, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Multi-lane mobile lane closures on northbound I-495 at Georgetown Pike for surveying and boring work.

495 North Express Lanes


Monday, September 11, through Friday, September 15, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single mobile lane closures on northbound 495 Express Lanes between Exit 45 and Old Dominion Drive for survey work.


495 South Express Lanes


Monday, September 11, through Friday, September 15, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single mobile lane closures at the entrance to southbound 495 Express Lanes for survey work.

GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL PARKWAY INTERCHANGE


Thursday, September 14, and Friday, September 15, 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The ramp from southbound I-495 to eastbound George Washington Memorial Parkway (Exit 43) will be closed for drainage work. Motorists should follow the posted detour.

BALLS HILL ROAD


Monday, September 11, through Friday, September 15, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Balls Hill Road will be reduced to a single lane at the Live Oak Drive intersection to accommodate water line testing work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE


Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Periodic temporary traffic stoppages on the ramps connecting Georgetown Pike and I-495 South as well as at the intersection of Georgetown Pike and I-495 South for traffic signal installation. If work is delayed due to weather conditions, it will be rescheduled for Wednesday, September 13, 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.


Monday, September 11, through Friday, September 15, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single right lane closures on the ramp from eastbound Georgetown Pike to southbound I-495 for signal pole installation. The left turn lane from westbound Georgetown Pike to southbound I-495 will also be closed for this work.

OLD DOMINION DRIVE


Monday, September 11, through Friday, September 15, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Old Dominion Drive will be reduced to a single lane on the bridge over I-495 to accommodate clearing work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Dulles Toll Road


Monday, September 11, through Thursday, September 14, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closures on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) between Route 123 and the I-495 interchange for drainage, embankment, and bridge work.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange. George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project. Learn more about the traffic change here.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scotts Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
