LMM Men's Shelter Dinner - (NEW)
-
Monday, March 20 from 4:30 PM to 7:35 PM - (NEW)
-
Monday, March 27 from 4:30 PM to 7:35 PM - (NEW)
Service participants in this activity will serve dinner at the shelter and if time allows, eat with the men there, engaging them in conversation. IMPORTANT: This activity involves direct interaction with men who are experiencing homelessness. Students largely work in the kitchen serving food cafeteria style. Serving a meal is a great introduction to those who haven’t had experience interacting with people who are homeless.
Dinner service begins at 5:30pm for the residents of 2100.

MedWish helps to re-purpose discarded medical supplies, and our volunteers help with this process. We collect tens of thousands of pounds of donated supplies each month and rely on volunteers to help us sort through these supplies, checking expiration dates and ensuring product viability.
Sorting takes place through a number of different steps, and volunteers can expect to participate in all steps of the process (examples include sorting medical supplies into categories, matching similar items together, boxing, and labeling inventory).
No medical experience is necessary!

Favorite Quote: “Even miracles take a little time” – Fairy Godmother, Cinderella
From the moment I stepped onto the campus of John Carroll, I have been engaged in service through CSSA. I began as a student wanting to get more involved in the community, and later, became a Student Liaison for CSSA because I wanted to encourage others to serve as well. Doing service every semester I have been at Carroll means that I have worked with numerous populations in a variety of different settings, but one particular service opportunity that has stuck with me was working with residents at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center (CCJDC) through the PowerSource program. PowerSource is a program that aims to develop emotional and social literacy skills in incarcerated youth by offering healthier coping strategies, and more importantly in my opinion, through the creation of a safe community to share thoughts, feelings, and concerns.
Beginning the PowerSource program, I was quite nervous and held a number of qualms about the experience. I wasn’t sure how well I would connect with the residents or if they would connect with me, coming from very different backgrounds. However, these fears were unwarranted. At the end of the day, the residents and I weren’t so different – we were just people trying to figure out how to make it through each day. It was this realization that caused me to take a step back and change my beliefs about incarcerated people, both youths and adults. Using the words emphasized by the PowerSource program, all people have a Core Self that is inherently good, even if we sometimes make unwise choices. PowerSource reminded me that I myself make unwise choices from time to time, but those choices do not define the kind of person I am. Therefore, I should not solely judge others based on choices they may have made in the past or a difficult situation.
Additionally, PowerSource has taught me the value of human connection and patience. During some sessions, the residents could not have cared less about the curriculum I was meant to teach or the activities I had planned, but rather wished to talk about life or music or art. At the beginning, these sessions would frustrate me, and I would work tirelessly to re-direct the conversation back to the curriculum, but I soon realized that these sessions were exactly what the residents needed. They needed to connect with people their own age about topics that mattered to them, not about anger or self-forgiveness (although important topics). By the end of the semester, I found myself enjoying these conversations because it allowed for the creation of a community I will hold dear to my heart long beyond my time at John Carroll.
