Learn about a Community Service Opportunity with SMUD!


SMUD and the Sacramento Youth Advocates Fellowship Pipeline present an opportunity for STEM students to serve the community and earn valuable professional experience. The SMUD S.T.E.A.M. Fellowship will train college students in simple science projects that they will then share in workshops at Sacramento's underserved elementary and middle schools. Fellows will also work with a professional mentor from SMUD to learn about STEM career paths and develop skills needed for the workplace. Join us for an information session on Wednesday, September 20, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm in the STEM Homebase at American River College. Lunch will be provided.

Join us for a "Write Your Way to Wellness" workshop on Thursday, September 21 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm via Zoom. Learn about the therapeutic power of wellness writing and journaling, which can help you decompress when life's many demands start to overwhelm you. All Los Rios students and employees are welcome to participate! Hosted by Folsom Lake College’s Reading & Writing Center.

Youth Symposium on Community Wellness


Join us Saturday, September 30, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, at Sacramento City College for “Youth Uniting to Build Community Wellness,” presented by NAMI California. This Northern Region Affiliates’ Youth Symposium is a free event, featuring interactive presentations and panels from youth leaders across the Capital region along with lunch and networking opportunities for attendees.

Your Voice Matters – Register to Vote!


National Voter Registration Day is celebrated every year on a Tuesday in September, and this year, it’s Tuesday, September 19. First organized in 2012, it is the nation’s largest, nonpartisan civic holiday dedicated to celebrating our democracy by registering as many eligible Americans to vote as possible through the collective efforts of thousands of volunteers, nonprofit organizations, businesses, schools, libraries, and election officials. The next California election will be the 2023 County Elections, followed by the Presidential Primary Election on March 5, 2024.

Championing Equity: AB 540 Regional Training

 

Undocumented students and student groups are invited to a free training on AB 540 on Friday, September 29, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, at Sacramento City College. Build community with practitioners supporting undocumented students, learn strategies to integrate the AB 540 FAQ on your campus or in your organization, and help to ensure that students receive the same information about AB 540 at any college or university in California.

Generous Spirit


Generous Spirit: Ollas y Pinturas Works by Stan Padilla and Ray Gonzales will be in the Kaneko Gallery from September 18 to October 11.

 

Stan is a mixed-media artist and a member of the highly regarded Royal Chicano Airforce, an artists’ collective honoring social justice and the civil rights movement. Stan has completed murals at Southside Park, the Macy’s downtown parking lot, and the California State Health Services Offices. His collaborative mural “Flight”, honoring the RCAF is in the Golden 1 Center. He currently lives and works on twenty acres in the Colfax/Weimar area where he is developing an artists’ sanctuary and spiritual cultural center.

           

Ray is a long-time advocate of the Arts and was a founding board member of several non-profit Arts organizations. As a board member of Lincoln Arts, Ray conceived of, developed and was chairman of, "Feats of Clay," an international, ceramic art competition that had a 24-year run and included artists from all 50 states as well as from numerous countries around the world.

 

A reception for the artists will be held at Kaneko Gallery at noon on Tuesday, September 26! Both artists will be present to give an artist talk.
