How often do you ask yourself, “Who am I? How am I? What am I thinking about, reacting to, worrying over? Is my behavior the result of my work, news, politics, family, friends, the weather?” I’m checking in on you to see how you are doing. The world has changed, and we must hang on for dear life with our families and friends and continue to stay strong, take care of ourselves - strengthen our minds and bodies…. Striving to be positive and to do good things for each other.

Our personality types and traits affect the ways we view and interpret the world and react to things around us. Our personalities enable us to help ourselves, our families, and our communities in some very significant ways. There are so many roles needed to build and protect our world. Sometimes it takes a lifetime to find your role, and the way we contribute to others and the world can change and evolve as we age.

Happy 2024!

Well, it’s finally winter, but during this long stretch of short days, JSL residences remain bright and hopping with activity. On Christmas Day, we had a great group of volunteers come visit with Meer residents during dinner time. And at Fleischman, the Mitzvah Day volunteers played games, did puzzles, led bingo and did crafts with residents. We are so grateful for the help and for coming out to make it a fun day. The highlight may have been the special Mitzvah Day cookies! Although everyone was safely masking to protect against all the bugs floating around, you could feel the big smiles. Big thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who made the afternoon so lovely!

As we roll into the new year, there are many, many opportunities to be part of JSL and, as you can see, the more the merrier! We’d love to have you, so feel free to give me a call or shoot me (Beth) an email at

A chef's hat has 100 pleats. Apparently, it's meant to represent the 100 ways you can cook an egg. Wonder if Gordon Ramsay knows that!

RINGING IN THE

NEW YEAR

Life Enrichment coordinators Joanne Kristal and Gillian Faust led 17 enthusiastic Coville (Oak Park) residents, staff members, one volunteer and a family member in a fun-filled afternoon celebration to bring in the New Year. They enjoyed party games, “Name That Tune” and trivia, followed by a glass of bubbly apple cider and snacks. Of course, this was followed by the obligatory singing of Auld Lang Syne and blowing party poppers. A fun time was had by all!

Thanks to special funding from The Egrin family, pianist, Cliff Monear and Barbara Ware entertained Meer residents with a jazz concert. Everyone dined on delicious Cornish hens or fresh salmon for dinner, and of course, champagne to welcome in the New Year.

WINTER CRAFTING

A group of crafty Hechtman residents began a winter luminaries project this week. Receptionist and project coordinator Ashley Vayko was inspired by nature's bounty on a winter day and brought the outdoors in.

Peace of Mind

Rabbi, please help me. I cannot find peace in my life,” implored a senior resident. “I am obsessed with the Hebrew word, Mashgiach. It continuously preoccupies my mind. My psychiatrist promised it would subside, but I am still struggling.”

I asked him, “Do you know the meaning of this word that disturbs you? It refers to a Rabbi who is appointed to oversee and supervise a kosher food operation. In his book of Psalms, King David writes, “From His dwelling place G-d oversees (Mashgiach) all the inhabitants of the earth’ (Psalms 33:13). Thus, G-d is the ultimate Mashgiach and supervisor of our world.”

I told him, “Whenever this word burdens you, think G-d and G-d alone for He is the Mashgiach Who oversees every detail of every created being.”

Rabbi, you mean I am to simply put it all into G-d’s Hands?”

Yes,” I replied. “This will bring you ultimate comfort and relief.”

Three weeks later the resident reported, “No longer do I feel tormented. My obsession was finally put to rest.”

It is now fifteen years since this story occurred and I derive tremendous strength from it. Whether good or not, cast your lot onto G-d for He will sustain you. Whether you are experiencing negative feelings, turbulent thoughts, unusual anxiety, or overwhelming fears, know that challenges serve as our daily tests to discern how real G-d is in our lives. Realize the Benevolent One loves you and for that reason challenges you to reach your greatest potential by overcoming life’s many tests.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
