LMM Men's Shelter Dinner - (NEW)
-
Monday, March 27 from 4:30 PM to 7:35 PM - (NEW)
Service participants in this activity will serve dinner at the shelter and if time allows, eat with the men there, engaging them in conversation. IMPORTANT: This activity involves direct interaction with men who are experiencing homelessness. Students largely work in the kitchen serving food cafeteria style. Serving a meal is a great introduction to those who haven’t had experience interacting with people who are homeless.
Dinner service begins at 5:30 pm for the residents of 2100.

MedWish helps to re-purpose discarded medical supplies, and our volunteers help with this process. We collect tens of thousands of pounds of donated supplies each month and rely on volunteers to help us sort through these supplies, checking expiration dates and ensuring product viability.
Sorting takes place through a number of different steps, and volunteers can expect to participate in all steps of the process (examples include sorting medical supplies into categories, matching similar items together, boxing, and labeling inventory).
No medical experience is necessary!

Favorite Quote: -"You are not lucky to be here. The world needs your perspective. They are lucky to have you.”— Antonio Tijerino
Being the daughter of a deported immigrant, I have always felt the need to be in the company of those who were being threatened by deportation. It is admittedly depressing and stressful work that can lead most down the road of pessimism. Knowing the system is against migrants and forcibly being a bystander is almost unbearable. However, working at International Newcomers Academy allows me to see the livelihood of those who have just arrived in the United States. Seeing this perspective has given me optimism in my social work to keep moving forward with immigration advocacy. Working with youth migrants shows me America’s bright future, a new form of empathy, and a willingness to be present. In other words, my heart has become lighter, fuller, and even empowered to go forth.
