YWCA Utah was honored to welcome gender-based violence experts from North Africa and the Near East for an opportunity to discuss and share best practices on preventing and confronting domestic abuse and violence. They were particularly interested in learning about our victim-centered and trauma-informed approach in our domestic violence shelter and at our Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center.
YWCA Speaks Out - Israel-Hamas War
World YWCA issued a statement condemning the escalating violence and threat to the safety and security of millions of families, women, young women, and girls.
YWCA is a worldwide organization with nearly 200 affiliates in the U.S. and many more throughout the globe. In 2015, World YWCA, located in Geneva, Switzerland, launched #Goal2035: “By 2035, 100 million young women and girls will transform power structures to create justice, gender equality and a world without violence and war; leading a sustainable YWCA movement, inclusive of all women.” This goal continues to be timely as countless women and girls are impacted by violence and war.

Margaret Mitchell, YWCA USA CEO, issued the following statement:
"At YWCA USA, we believe in a world of justice, where all people — particularly women and girls — are safe and free from violence. The violence that erupted this week in the Middle East – including reports of violence committed against civilian women, the elderly, children and babies – leaves no doubt that this vision of justice, safety, and freedom from violence has been shattered for millions."

Strolling for Change - Child Care Advocacy
Parents, child care professionals, advocates, and kiddos rallied, marched and strolled throughout the Utah State Capitol during the October Interim Session. Several staff from YWCA Utah's Lolie Eccles Early Education Center attended and we were all inspired by the speech from our colleague, Marcella Viladiu-Gattis, Assistant Director of Children's Services. Read Marcella's story here.
Visit Utah Care For Kids to find out how you can get involved, learn more about the issue, and read the extensive press coverage highlighting the challenges and solutions to the child care crisis.

UPDATE FROM YWCA USA
Federal shutdown averted, but the work must continue!
Thank you to all who took action with us in the weeks leading up to the Sept. 30 federal budget deadline. With little time to spare, Congress averted a government shutdown by passing a 45-day Continuing Resolution (CR), a stopgap funding measure now in effect until Nov. 17.
While this is good news, there is still much to be done to address our top federal budget priorities. Here’s how you can help:
-
Tell us your child care story: Congress failed to provide much-needed funding to replace the ARPA stabilization funds that expired on Sept. 30. This could result in 3.2 million lost child care slots -- eliminating one-third of the country's child care capacity. How will child care budget cuts impact you?
-
Take action for VOCA:
-
Tell Congress: No cuts to The Victims of Crime Act (VOCA)! VOCA is the largest source of federal funding for domestic and sexual violence services. Congress has proposed a 40% decrease in VOCA funding, which would result in millions of victims nationwide losing access to crucial victim services.
-
Tell us your VOCA story: How has VOCA made a difference in your community?

The next interim session takes place on November 14-15, 2023. November 15th is the last day a legislator can designate priority bill requests number one and two. Interim Schedule.
