135th Street Full Closure This Weekend

This weekend, all lanes of 135th Street under U.S. 69 will be fully closed for the demolition of the northbound U.S. 69 bridge over 135th Street. The closure will begin tonight, Friday, Jan. 5th at 8 p.m. and all lanes will reopen by Monday, Jan. 8th at 6 a.m. The eastbound 135th Street to northbound U.S. 69 loop ramp will also be closed during this time. All other ramps will remain open for "right turn only" movements.

The following detour routes will be marked as shown in the graphic below:

Construction Update: Bridges

Welcome to the work zone!

A full road closure was needed at I-435 overnight for this girder set for future southbound U.S. 69 bridge over I-435 in December. Photo courtesy of 69Express Constructors.

This month, bridge work will continue across the project area. At the south end of the project, crews are preparing to install shoring towers and pour the bridge deck (or surface) of the northbound bridge over 143rd Street. At 139th Street, crews are planning to demolish the northbound bridge of U.S. 69 to prepare for new bridge construction. At 135th Street bridge construction also continues over Tomahawk Creek as crews prepare to install new piers and girders.

Moving north to Blue Valley Parkway, construction work will continue through the winter on several new bridges and walls. At Indian Creek and North Branch Indian Creek, beam installation is also slated for the end of the month. Finally, at I-435, crews are preparing for another deck pour this month.

Several closures will be necessary throughout the U.S. 69 corridor as bridge construction continues this winter. Please monitor the project website or sign up for text alerts to remain informed about upcoming closures. To maintain public safety, several trails will also be closed or detoured during bridge construction including the Tomahawk Creek and Indian Creek Trails. Please monitor the Overland Park Trail Closure Map for detour routes and the latest information.

Upcoming Public Meeting

As we mark our first year of construction, the 69Express project team will be hosting a public meeting on February 22, 2024 at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center in Overland Park from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to provide project information, construction updates and overview work slated for 2024.

Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to talk to project team members, see visualizations of past and upcoming work, learn more about the noise wall construction schedule and how the express lanes will function. More information about the public meeting will be available on the project website as the date approaches.

Need to speak to the project team prior to the public meeting? Email us at info@69express.org and we will respond promptly.

Behind the Scenes

A new bridge is under construction near southbound U.S. 69 over North Branch Indian Creek. In this photo, the h-piling can be seen. These steel piles can run between 30 and 40 feet in length and will support the bridge abutment. Photo courtesy of 69Express Constructors.

The 69Express Project Team is excited to announce a new addition to our project website – a photo gallery! Visit our website to see behind-the-scenes photos, action shots and aerial images. This gallery will be updated weekly, allowing you to regularly follow construction progress. Please visit https://69express.ksdot.gov/construction-photos/ to review the photo gallery.
