Home + Work = Restoration:
Rebuilding Lives Through
The Foundation Of A Good Job

Fredrick Hatton was a “PK” (pastor’s kid). Married to his lovely Sandra, he joined the army, and in 1989 was convicted of murder. He spent 32 years and five months in prison, claiming his innocence every single day. You might think he'd be bitter, but you’d be wrong. Instead, he spent his time working and taking classes, always looking toward the future.
He is an example of the great success a reentrant can have who is employed quickly after release. He is now a valued employee at 2nd Chance Indiana Employer Partner, Volumod, a company that builds modular housing and knows the value of reentrant employees.
Now Fred has an additional job. He rises at 4am five days a week to drive the 2nd Chance Indiana van as he picks up fellow employees for work and takes them home again when the day is done. Fred is an integral part of 2nd Chance Indiana’s Van Transportation Program which is aimed at removing the No. 1 barrier for reentrants to getting and keeping a job, which is lack of reliable transportation. Fred says that the vans improve attendance and riders make friends as they ride together.
At the end of each day he and Sandra are together, savoring life again, on the firm foundation of employment with a company that has a culture of acceptance. PICTURED: Frederick Hatton, on the job.

Community Corrections
WORKING TOGETHER:
Community Corrections Is
All In for Better Outcomes

Meetings between 2nd Chance Indiana folks and the leadership of Duvall Residential Center (a work-release facility, under Indiana Department of Correction) centered on improving the futures of the people who live there. They discussed the mentor research study underway at Butler's Lacy School of business, revamping job posting to make it as easy as possible for reentrants, job training, with the hopes that we can conduct classes at Duvall, and other efforts like planning an in-house job fair for Duvall's clients, and providing van transportation to and from work. It's a big opportunity for everyone involved and the kind of help needed to provide the best possible outcomes for those who want to have a new and better life after release. Years of Experience On Tap For Reentrants

Phil Moore (center) has joined the 2nd Chance Indiana Reentry room effort at the Marion County Adult Detention Center (MCADC). Phil has used his lived experience counseling reentrants for many years in Indianapolis. His caring and careful attention to each client builds rapport and trust as they search together for needed support services and employment opportunities.
2nd Chance Indiana’s Sherry Jackson met with Phil to go through the statistical information we collect and quantify, and Doug Evans, Site Leader for 2CI’s effort at MCRC was there to welcome Phil.
Phil is now hard at work helping folks who need a hand up and a path to success in the future, offering each a personal mentor if needed. We are so happy to have Phil with us in this work! NANCY'S BLOG POST:
When They Say They "Didn't Do It..."

Some people who are incarcerated continually say they are innocent. “I’m not guilty,” “I didn’t do it,” “The hearing was rigged.” You name it.
But would you be surprised to learn that with the few cases the Innocence Project has been able to investigate, 249 people were found to be not guilty, 202 were exonerated by DNA evidence, and collectively, those prisoners spent 3,874 years in prison—each serving an average of 18 years for a crime they never committed?
In the case of Malcom Alexander, that is what happened. He spent 38 years in a Louisiana prison for a rape that DNA proves he didn't commit. How does this happen? You'll find out Here! Pictured: Malcom Alexander, exonerated after 38 years in prison.
At Volumod:
Molly & Eden Train Drivers In 2CI Transportation Program

2nd Chance Indiana’s Molly Oliver's No. 1 goal is to help reentrants secure reliable transportation to and from work so that they don’t lose their jobs because of truancy caused by unreliable transportation. She teamed up with Eden Hopper from Commute With Enterprise (CWE), who provided training and support for the drivers at 2CI’s Employer Partner, Volumod. Why Support 2nd Chance Indiana?
2nd Chance Indiana's team works to reduce recidivism and rebuild lives through the dignity of work. In the process we believe that our efforts can also have a profound, multi-generational impact by reducing poverty, crime, and homelessness.
Our major focus is to assist the thousands of inmates returning to communities across Indiana after long-term incarceration. 2nd Chance Indiana provides mentored job training inside the correctional facility, and a jobs website for those with a criminal record, 2ndChanceIN.com, which is filled with job opportunities and support agencies to help reentrants get back to work, support themselves and their families, and contribute to the economic improvement of their neighborhoods.

How You Can Support Jobs for Justice- Involved Individuals
Support For Reentrants After Incarcertion:
Since 2017 UNITE INDY, now 2nd Chance Indiana, has provided a free web-based system, 2ndChanceIN.com, that connects those released from incarceration with jobs offered by our 45 employer partners, willing to hire people with a criminal record and pay them a living wage.
The site also offers a huge network of support organizations that can help with housing, drug abatement, licensing, clothing and so much more.

A good job found quickly after release from incarceration drives down recidivism about 90%, according to studies. Unemployment is connected to poverty, a criminal record, and re-incarceration. Our poorest neighborhoods contain many who have not been able to get good jobs because they have a criminal record, but 2nd Chance Indiana not only connects them with jobs, it also provides van transportation to many sites to help those who do not have affordable or reliable transportation. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment is extremely high and poverty remains the overwhelming cause of violence and lack of opportunity for children.

You can help us to help a reentrant today, Here! To know more, go to 2nd Chance Indiana now. There are a number of choices that are all secure and safe. By sending your fully tax deductible gift* now we can have a greater impact meeting needs in our community.
Many, many thanks!
