"A Million Dreams”

THE MID-WEEK BUZZ

Happy Thursday, CHURCH!

What a terrific day we had in worship on Sunday. I hope that there were things that resonated with your spirit’s as we navigate, “The Million Dreams,” God has gifted us with in the amazing faith community. It was so great to see some folks I have not seen in quite a long time. The Spirit’s energy in the room was palpable. Thank you to all who made our short time together so meaningful. A special shout out to our very own Jazzmine Farol for bringing her stunning voice to the Disney classic, “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”

There is a great deal going on at the church lately. A special thank you to Marlene R. who has been such a gift in the office as we make the transition from Debbie/Pat to Vicki. It is amazing how much it takes to keep this church going. Tuesday mornings are especially active. The first folks to arrive are the money counters, and what a faithful group they are. The book club is in at 10:00 a.m. Vicki and I are there about 10:00. There are evaluations of the weekend and a plan for moving forward in the week. Nothing makes me happy like hearing a bunch of people enjoying each other.

Sunday, we will still be in our New Year Sermon Series, “A Million Dreams.” Sunday focus will be the dreams we have for others. This week will look at an often-overlooked woman in the New Testament, whose name was Salome. Salome had very big dreams for her two boys. Come Sunday morning to her more about this amazing woman. Until Sunday, find some time to dream. Think about those people in your lives for which you dream. How far would you go to help them realize the amazing gift of their imagination? I love being your pastor.

Holding you close and lifting you high!

Aspirational Worship

As we talk about dreams in our New Year’s sermon series, I have naturally been thinking a bit about worship and dreams. One of the places I have been contemplating this application is the idea of what I’ll call “aspirational worship.” This is the idea of singing lyrics that are not completely true, but that we aspire/dream/wish to be true. For instance, the classic Hillsong anthem “I Give You My Heart” says “Lord, I give you my heart, I give you my soul. I live for you alone. Every breath that I take, every moment I’m awake, Lord have your way in me.” Or perhaps the lyrics from the hymn “I Surrender All” that says “All to Jesus I surrender, all to him I freely give.” These lyrics are big claims that few of us live out daily and certainly not “every moment.”

It’s this idea that led A.W. Tozer to say “Christians don’t tell lies – they just go to church and sing them.” Is this statement fair? Yes and no? I find that “dreaming” in worship, reaching toward who we want to be as humans and as Christians is an important spiritual practice in our spiritual journeys. I think there needs to be a balance of recognizing the tension Martin Luther calls us to that we are simultaneously sinners and saints. Perhaps these aspirational lyrics can bring some healthy conviction that recognizes, “I’m certainly not living this song out” but still leads us toward devotion and life change rather than shame (a concept that is worthy of a few posts itself).

Happy New Year from Outreach!

The weather has certainly been wintery! So, it’s our pleasure to announce that for our Basket of Hope drive in the months of January and February, Outreach will be benefiting Ladle Fellowship.

We are asking particularly for Men’s items, especially shoes, as well as socks, jackets/coats/sweatshirts, pants/sweatpants, and sleeping bags. Cold weather items are appreciated, as well.

Your generosity last year, as always in the years before, helped to warm the hearts and bodies of so many people who needed that tangible love the most, so in 2024 let’s hit the ground running (Hebrews 12:1-3) and help many more!
