Why Volunteer? A Homeowner's Story

Repairing homes and building connections...

When MATE volunteers fix a roof, build a ramp, or install drywall, they’re not just repairing a house-- they're also creating connections with our homeowner partners. They build, they listen, they laugh. Volunteers join MATE to serve and go home with relationships that sometimes last for years and leave enduring impressions on everyone. Working and connecting through MATE can be a life-changing experience on all sides.

Last summer an experienced team from New Hampshire completed a critical roof repair project. What did the home repairs mean to the homeowner? “When you guys peeled those shingles off, I breathed a sign of relief. It was sort of like a guardian angel got placed on top of my head. A huge relief that it’s not raining in my hallway anymore. Spurred me to go further and do more to transform this house into a home.”

And the homeowner said more: “They’ve been gone a few months, but in years to come, they will always be here. They weren’t just volunteers; I ended up making friends. They started off as strangers, then on the second day, I was telling them jokes and horsing around with them and helping them out however I could, and by day 3 they were closer than my family. I miss them.”

MATE has volunteers who return year after year. Some have come for over 30 years, and some for over 40. We are grateful! This summer we will also have new volunteers and work teams; some are young and some are older. All will do critical work; they will give their time and expertise, and they will get back even more from the connections they make with their fellow team mates and our homeowner partners. Thank you!

More Volunteer Opportunities

Want to volunteer without using a hammer?

MATE is looking for volunteers to help in other ways besides housing repairs. MATE is a faith-based 501(c) 3 non-profit which relies on volunteers for much of its administration and operations. Good news: we have limited overhead, AND, our volunteers are greatly appreciated! Bad news: we have limited staff who do a great job but are STRETCHED! Even with a hands-on Board, we would sure love to have year-round skilled volunteers for a variety of projects. You could join us! (Or share this with someone you know!)

Right now we need experienced volunteers to help with fundraising, grant writing and marketing. We are always looking for local volunteers, but this work can also be done remotely. To find out more, contact Chris DeLisle, MATE's Executive Director, at cdelisle@missionattheeastward.org, or Sharon Cowen, Board Chair, at sbcowen@comcast.net.
