Hello Friends!
I hope that you were able to have some fun in the sun this Summer. My family enjoyed participating in the Placer County Library’s Summer at your Library program. My niece (aka the Littlest Friend of the Library) earned all her reading badges and enjoyed our family trips to the library to pick out board books. She recommends Jamberry by Bruce Degen, and The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle for all the toddlers in your life.
Over 1 million minutes were read by Placer County residents over the 2-month long Summer Reading program and attendance at the special events and programs was off the charts. The Friends are happy to have been able to contribute $2,500 toward this year’s Summer Reading program!
I have good news on the library budget. At their June 13th meeting, the Board of Supervisors voted to use our increased tax revenue allocation to reinstate Monday hours at the Auburn and Rocklin libraries! As you know, we’ve waited patiently for 8 years to have our Monday hours returned and during that time Placer County has seen our population grow; and we’ve all noticed the strain on our Library System. You’ve endured longer wait times for materials, attended crowded programing and story times, and sometimes there isn’t a space to be found in the parking lot! These are first world problems to be sure, but frustrating none the less when you can’t use an important community asset. We can’t wait for Library Administration to hire and train the necessary staff and announce the re-opening of Mondays. Maybe we’ll even throw a party!? (Stay tuned)
The Friends are pleased to host our Spooky Storytime at the Station on October 30th @ 4:00pm, at the Rocklin Police Station. We are looking forward to your awesome costumes and some Halloween stories read by our Rocklin Police Officers and Public Safety Volunteers. We’ll give you a Trick-or-Treating safety refresher and hand out some candy too!
We have had some great donations of used books recently, so go check out the bookstore next time you’re at the library. We also have one more Super Surplus Book Sale for the year, so mark your calendars for November 4 and we’ll see you at the Rocklin Parks and Recreation Office (aka the former Fifth Street Library). If you’re a current member, you get to shop first at 9:00am with the sale opening to the public at 9:30am. We’ll have great holiday gifts for all the book lovers on your list.
I can’t thank you enough for your contributions and support of the Placer County Library System by being a member of the Rocklin Friends of the Library. We can’t do our advocacy, outreach, and collection development without you.

Placer County Library Update

There’s been so much happening in the Placer County Library (PCL), I thought I’d share a few of the highlights!
The Placer School for Adults has restarted their English as a Second Language (ESL) program in the Rocklin Library. Certified educators offer guidance in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to English language learners at every stage of proficiency. Classes at the Rocklin Library will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 -- 2:30 p.m. The fall semester runs through the end of December.
It's back to school for Rocklin Unified students, and we’re back to publishing the Placer County Library’s educator newsletter, Beyond Your Classroom Walls. As in last year’s fall issue, Library Card Signup Month is spotlighted with a return of the incentive Teacher Appreciation Basket. Instructors who book a classroom visit or library tour are eligible to win a basket of sweet treats, a mug, coffee, and other delights. Last year, 140 students, teachers, and chaperones visited the Rocklin Library for tours!
Placer County Library now has Kanopy! Kanopy is a streaming service that offers a convenient way to enjoy a wide array of movies, television series, and children's content through on-demand access. The dedicated Kanopy Kids section has no borrowing restrictions, allowing limitless educational and entertainment possibilities for our young audience.
We've introduced several new additions to our Novelist resource. Novelist is a powerful resource for readers to explore similar books based on genres, subjects, authors, and a host of other criteria. It's a treasure trove of literary recommendations waiting to be explored, making it even easier to discover the next great read. Novelist+ is an expansion of Novelist that now encompasses non-fiction titles. NoveList K-8 (fiction) and NoveList K-8+ (non-fiction) are designed to cater to children's reading needs. These tools serve as invaluable reader's advisory resources, ensuring an enriching literary experience for young readers. Additionally, we've incorporated a feature that can now seamlessly display read-a-likes directly within the PCL catalog. Titles in the catalog will showcase recommendations for similar titles, alongside Goodreads reviews, Lexile, and AR scores where applicable.

Rocklin Reads 2023 raises awareness about Fentanyl
Sam Quinones, author of “The Least of Us: True Tales of America and Hope In the Time of Fentanyl and Meth,” will be the featured speaker on:

Quinones’ book has much to say about the new drugs wreaking havoc in America while telling the stories of the people trying to make a difference.
Joining Quinones will be Laura Didier, outreach coordinator for Song for Charlie, a website that offers a convenient fentanyl education course to help parents and caregivers connect with their children to have constructive conversations about the new chemical drug landscape.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is cheap to produce, difficult to detect and extremely dangerous. Black market dealers are manufacturing fake pills made of fentanyl (“fentapills) to look like Percocet, Oxycodone or Xanax and selling these pills to unsuspecting customers through social media outlets. Sadly, it only takes 2mg of fentanyl to be considered a lethal dose.
In 2020, 24 Placer County residents lost their lives to fentanyl poisoning – nearly half under age 25. One of those was Laura and Chris Didier’s 17-year-old son, Zach, an honor student at Whitney High School. He purchased what he thought was a prescription Percocet tablet from a drug dealer on the social media platform, Snapchat. That one pill turned out to be a “fentapill.” By the time his father found him in his room, Zack had died from fentanyl poisoning. Virgil Xavier Bordner, 22, plead to all charges in the fentanyl death of Didier on July 12, 2022. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison on
Sept. 1, 2022.

This is the fifth year the Rocklin Friends of the Library have hosted Rocklin Reads, a program established to encourage residents to read the same book as well as raise awareness about local history or social issues.

Rocklin Friends of the Library will host its semi-annual book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 5460 Fifth St. (Johnson-Springview Park).
Members can shop from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The sale will be open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Book lovers can fill a bag for $5 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
The sale offers a stress-free holiday shopping experience. In addition to a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books, there will be a gift table with specially priced collectible and vintage books as well as gift sets.
There will also be a large selection of children and teen books, DVDs and CDs.
Proceeds from our sales are used by the Placer County library staff to purchase adult and children’s books as well as special materials for the library collection.

Thanks to the generous support of book lovers in our community, last June’s Super Surplus Book Sale brought in nearly $1,042. That’s a lot of books, CDs, DVDs and jigsaw puzzles, not to mention some unique collectibles.
