Senate Bill 984 Up For Vote Today
Last Monday, Senate Bill 984, which would regulate all hemp products as marijuana (banning them outside of dispensaries), had a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee. You can listen to that hearing, starting around the 21st minute, here:
Today, around 2pm, the Senate Judiciary Committee will be voting on this bill. You can listen to the committee audio when the hearing starts here:
The bill likely has votes to pass, although some members of the Committee have noted objections to putting hemp products into the marijuana regulatory system. Our goal is to amend this bill, if possible, to include protect our Missouri hemp manufacturers, farmers, and retailers. Action on this bill on the Senate floor is likely weeks away, but we know we’ll have a fight.
The House companion, HB 1781, had a hearing two weeks ago in the House Crime Prevention & Public Safety Committee. You can watch that hearing here:
We expect a vote on HB 1781 in a week or two. However, we have a much stronger position in the House, where lawmakers are much more skeptical of the marijuana program. Remember, a bill has to pass both the House and the Senate to get sent to the Governor’s desk. We have 3 months before the General Assembly adjourns for the year.
We need you to do two things:
Make sure your consumers are aware of this issue and are communicating with their State Representatives and Senators. They can look up their Representative or Senator at www.house.mo.gov
Make sure your retailer operators and distributors or manufacturers are aware of this issue. If they have not contributed to our work yet, they need to do so - the marijuana industry pays their lobbyists $2.5 million a year and they have invested a huge amount of money to put us out of business.
