Roman Horoszewski

Our rowing community lost a treasure when long time Peddie Rowing Coach Roman George "Tré" Horoszewski, 57, passed away on July 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Roman coached the Peddie novice teams for over ten years before taking over the Boy Head Coach position in 2023.

Roman was born on April 4, 1967, at RAF Lakenheath, England. After Roman graduated from Randolph High School in 1985, he attended Rutgers College, where he majored in economics. Perhaps his most formative experience at Rutgers came in the four years he rowed, starting in the top freshman boat and moving on to varsity crew, where he rowed in legendary boats with five future Olympians.

A lifelong learner, Roman continued his education with a Masters in City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Florida Gulf Coast University, leading to a long career in real estate development. For the last 14 years he worked as a senior program manager for the New Jersey School Development Authority.

In 1991, Roman met Laura Preston at the University of North Carolina. They were married in 1994 and had 3 sons, Roman Michael, Gavin, and Preston (PJ). Roman is survived by his family and his sister, Meredith Horoszewski Lavery.

Rowing remained a passion throughout Roman's life. After graduating college, Roman rowed for Penn AC on Philadelphia's boathouse row under coach Ted Nash, winning a gold and a silver medal at the U.S. Olympic Rowing Festival and five gold medals at Canadian Henley. In his later years, he treasured passing on that knowledge, along with many life lessons, in his decade-long role as a rowing coach for the Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey.

Also an accomplished artist, Roman found a strong following for his formidable talents as a woodcarver, completing over a hundred commissions including work for Penn AC Rowing Association and Columbia University, and was featured in the Rowing Blazers catalog, website and coffee table book.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or to the Rutgers Foundation–Men's Crew Fund.

Coach Spotlight

Kristen Harkins

Kristen Harkins was in the Mercer class of 2020 and a captain her senior year. She returned to Mercer this fall to be an assistant coach with the Novice Girls. Read more about Kristen in our Coach Spotlight:

How/when did you get involved in rowing?

I started rowing my freshman year of high school. My older sister was a coxswain and when I saw her first race I knew this sport was for me.

What are some of your most memorable rowing moments?

Some memorable moments are my first ever race which was the Head of the Schuylkill, my first time at Nationals my sophomore year and medaling at the Royal Canadian Henley.

Do you have a favorite workout?

My favorite workout would probably be 20x40” on 20” off, high pace hard yet fun. But I always love a good relay piece.

What is it like to come back to Mercer and coach?

It has been so much fun to be back at Mercer coaching. I love teaching the new generation of rowers in the place that started my love of the sport.

Any words of advice to new Mercer rowers?

My words of advice to new rowers is to have fun but push yourself. You never know what you are capable of unless you try and to never give up!

Support Capital City Rowing League at Old Hights Brewery

The Trenton Introduction to Rowing program is an after school erg program that introduces students to the sport of rowing through instruction on the erg machine. In June of 2024, the Inaugural Capital City Indoor Rowing League Championships was a culmination of the first year of this program with 5 schools competing: Clara Parker Intermediate School, Joyce Kilmer Intermediate School, Thomas Jefferson Intermediate School, Village Charter School and Christina Seix Academy.

The Old Hights Brewery is hosting a social event this Friday, October 25 to support the program. Can't make it? Buy a ticket and support the program as it has expanded to 6 schools and students from 9 different schools in the Trenton area.
