Our rowing community lost a treasure when long time Peddie Rowing Coach Roman George "Tré" Horoszewski, 57, passed away on July 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Roman coached the Peddie novice teams for over ten years before taking over the Boy Head Coach position in 2023.
Roman was born on April 4, 1967, at RAF Lakenheath, England. After Roman graduated from Randolph High School in 1985, he attended Rutgers College, where he majored in economics. Perhaps his most formative experience at Rutgers came in the four years he rowed, starting in the top freshman boat and moving on to varsity crew, where he rowed in legendary boats with five future Olympians.
A lifelong learner, Roman continued his education with a Masters in City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Florida Gulf Coast University, leading to a long career in real estate development. For the last 14 years he worked as a senior program manager for the New Jersey School Development Authority.
In 1991, Roman met Laura Preston at the University of North Carolina. They were married in 1994 and had 3 sons, Roman Michael, Gavin, and Preston (PJ). Roman is survived by his family and his sister, Meredith Horoszewski Lavery.
Rowing remained a passion throughout Roman's life. After graduating college, Roman rowed for Penn AC on Philadelphia's boathouse row under coach Ted Nash, winning a gold and a silver medal at the U.S. Olympic Rowing Festival and five gold medals at Canadian Henley. In his later years, he treasured passing on that knowledge, along with many life lessons, in his decade-long role as a rowing coach for the Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey.
Also an accomplished artist, Roman found a strong following for his formidable talents as a woodcarver, completing over a hundred commissions including work for Penn AC Rowing Association and Columbia University, and was featured in the Rowing Blazers catalog, website and coffee table book.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or to the Rutgers Foundation–Men's Crew Fund.
