Congratulations to this year’s Michael L. Friedland, MD Educational Leadership Award recipient, Dr. Jennifer Caceres, on this well-deserved accomplishment!
The Michael L. Friedland, MD Educational Leadership Award is given annually by the Schmidt College of Medicine to a faculty member who epitomizes the attributes of Dr. Friedland, namely Integrity, Vision, Leadership and Dedication to Teaching. This award will serve to remind us all of his contributions as the Founding Dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and his many contributions as a teacher and mentor.

On Friday February 3, the Teaching Academy hosted Dr. Holly Gooding from Emory University as our 2023 Visiting Scholar. A master educator who is a leader at the Harvard Macy Institute, Dr. Gooding engaged our faculty in discussions around inclusive teaching, supporting struggling learners and the neuroscience of learning. More than 50 faculty from the College joined sessions.

Dr. Charles Hennekens was invited to present an inspirational lecture to all students at the Claire and Emmanuel Rosenblatt High School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy as part of the Medical Studies program. His topic - Planning for Academic Success included tips about critical appraisal of facts, hard work and pursuing diverse interests.

The officers of the Endocrine Student Interest Group hosted Dr. Rolando Rodriguez to speak about "A Day in the Life of an Endocrinologist. This was a chance for first- and second-year medical students to learn more about the field of Endocrinology. This engaging session was the inaugural event planned by the officers to kick off their club activities/interests, stimulating interest and providing great information!

Maral Darya, MS3 and Ryan Stalder, MS3 participated in a study during 2021 Summer Trauma Research at the Delray Medical Center with Dr. Alexander Fokin and Joanna Wycech Knight. They presented data at the Academic Surgical Congress in February 2023 in Orlando. This is the first study addressing the value and timing of the first CT after surgery in patients with severe TBI. They were the first to address the phenomenon of reversal of the CT findings if scanning is done too early. This paper contains patients from two trauma centers in our community so hospitals can benefit from this information. 🔗 Read Publication

Maral Darya, MS3 and Michelly Gonzalez, MS4 worked with Dr. Fernando Recio, a gynecologic oncologist on an OBGYN case report over the past few months. They presented the case at the AMA's Region 4 event, Physicians of the Future Summit Virtual Poster Symposium and received the Runner-up Case Study.

Dr. Kushinga Bvute is an Internal Medicine Resident, rotating at Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Baptist Health Bethesda Hospital East. Dr. Bvute received the 2022 Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award at the Gold Humanism Ceremony. She’s taken leadership roles in national organizations, including the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, has published several papers, presented and won awards at multiple national meetings, and she always includes medical students or fellow residents in her work.
Dr. Bvute leads her team with confidence and grace. She is encouraging to her juniors, supporting them to perform their best each day. Congratulations Dr. Bvute!

Healthcare Careers Opportunity Pathways (HCOP) |
|
The goal of College of Medicine engagement with youth (PreK-12 grade students) in our community is to develop a physician workforce reflective of our South Florida population and by doing so, address our region’s healthcare workforce shortage and improve health outcomes for all. Founded in 1961 with a vision for full equity in education, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) now boasts the most diverse student body in the state of Florida’s university system, and we need look no further than our own students to meet the healthcare needs of our community. Our longitudinal program is structured by education level and as appropriate involves these elements: Applications Assistance, Healthcare Careers Awareness/exposure, Biological Sciences Lessons, Career Exploration, Clinical Exposure, College Preparedness, Financial Literacy, Formal Mentoring, Health Professions Identity Development, Informal Mentoring, Professional Soft Skills, and Research Exposure.
Since 2011 community outreach program inception, FAU College of Medicine has collaborated with the School District of Palm Beach County to engage more than 5,700 middle and high school students. Healthcare Careers Opportunity Pathways (HCOP) hands-on lessons are created and facilitated by medical student volunteers, often shadowed by COM graduate students, as well as FAU undergraduate Pre-Health and College of Nursing students. To date, more than 400 of our medical students have devoted greater than 9,000 combined hours serving as mentors and teachers to PreK-12th grade students in our rich and diverse community. The schools currently involved in our community-serving program have high racial/ethnic and socioeconomic diversity. Between 60% and 90% of students at participating schools are eligible for Free/Reduced Lunch, and Black and Latino populations at these schools are 50-90%. Many of our pathway students will be the first to attend college in their family.

Julie Pilitsis, MD, Ph.D., MBA, Integrative Health physician at FAU Medicine, had the opportunity to present "Deep Brain Stimulation or Focused Ultrasound - What is Best for Me?"
Dr. Joanna Drowos, Integrative Health physician, wasn’t able to attend the event, but she had a very special message for the attendees. Dr. Drowos recently had the opportunity to participate in a production about the life and music of Neil Diamond. Mr. Diamond currently lives with Parkinson’s disease and is no longer able to perform, but guests at opening night on Broadway received a spectacular surprise! 🔗 Watch the Video
