Sunday Bulletin - October 20

James and John were the third and fourth disciples called by Jesus. They left their father Zebedee in the boat when they went to follow Jesus immediately after he called out to them. When “The Twelve” were officially commissioned, Jesus referred to these two as Boanerges, or “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:16). We can make all kinds of assumptions about why they got this nickname, but one thought is it’s because of their hot tempers, or maybe they were simply a pair of rambunctious brothers.

Lots has been written and thought about their request to Jesus that they might sit at his right hand and his left, to be given a place of glory. That moment will strike each of us differently depending on our assumptions about their motivations, and it’s always important to read the text as we have it, not as we might think we remember it. Here, they are making this request to Jesus immediately after he has said, “The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests; they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him.”

What if James and John didn’t ignore that, hoping for a place in Heaven, but instead they were saying, “If they’re going to do that to you, then they’re going to do that to us, too.” It’s reminiscent of Thomas saying, “Let us go and die with him.” Thought of this way, this may be one of those instances where these two figure it out before the others. Even if they do not have it figured out forever, for just a moment they realize what it means to be a disciple.

For us, these instances may also come and go. We may have moments of courage and moments of cowardice. At the end of it all, our hope is that our moments of courage outnumber the moments of cowardice, and we can look to James and John to see what it means to stand faithfully alongside Jesus as he walks the way of the cross.

"Thank You"

Celebration for Liz

On October 20, following our 9:30 AM service, we'll take some time to celebrate Liz's time and ministry with us and let those of you who didn't get to see her before she left tell her "Congratulations!" Please mark your calendar for this date, and we look forward to seeing you there as we celebrate her time with us and her new opportunity with her new work.

Pledge Card Ingathering

On Sunday, October 20 we invite you to bring in your completed 2025 Pledge Card as we give thanks for your offerings for our new year. If you still need more time, that's okay! If you've already completed it and turned it in, thank you! All gifts offered to the glory of God are good, and we thank you for what you have done for St. James' these many years.

New Castle County HOPE Center-for Individuals and Families in need of temporary housing and support services.

What started as temporary housing during the cold weather of 2020-2021 has grown into a permanent center that provides housing and support services for individuals and families who are without adequate housing in New Castle County. New Castle County (NCC) purchased the former Sheraton Hotel on Airport Rd (now named the New Castle County HOPE Center) and kept the hotel management staff to keep the facility running.  Working together, many non-profit organizations including Family Promise provide various services and support for individuals and families to obtain emergency and more significant housing and medical, psychological, and job skills opportunities as well. The hotel can accommodate 400 and suites and adjoining rooms are given to families and enable households to stay together. Housing is coordinated through the Delaware Housing Alliance.

If you know of anyone who needs this housing, please ask them to call 1-833-FIND-BED (1-833-3463-233) and leave a message.
