UCSF Curriculum Ambassadors Advance Equity Through Research
Five UCSF medical students participating in the Curriculum Ambassador program (CURAM) presented their research projects, focused on enhancing the Bridges Curriculum, during the Summer Explore Symposium in November.
CURAM, launched in 2001, is the hallmark of curricular change and enhancement at UCSF where medical students can play an integral role in shaping the evolution of the School of Medicine curriculum. Projects through the years have focused on top priority areas for curriculum improvement and innovations, and during the last three years, students partnered with faculty members to design and implement projects that advance the Anti-Oppression Curriculum Initiative (AOCI).
This year, four of five students partnered with AOCI faculty mentors to work on projects tied directly to the AOCI and one student partnered with faculty educators to work on an equity-focused project related to professionalism.

CFE3: Faculty Development for Busy Schedules
Curious about faculty development, but short on time? That's why the UCSF School of Medicine's Center for Faculty Educators has developed CFE3, a three-minute video series to quickly introduce concepts and skills that are relevant to all faculty interacting with learners in any setting.
New CFE3 episodes will be released monthly and upcoming topics will include microaggressions and team dynamics, creating inclusive learning environments, written evaluations, and more.
| |
|
Microaggressions Basics
Learn about the impacts of microaggressions on learners and why it is important that you recognize and respond to microaggressions when they occur.
| | |
|
Effective Feedback in the Moment
Learn how to use a simple three-part framework to give learners meaningful feedback that helps them grow.
| | |
Is there a skill or topic you’d like to see in an upcoming CFE3 episode or workshop?

CCEP Approves Three Policy Updates
CPX Grade Clarification and Appeal Process
CCEP approved a new Clinical Performance Exam (CPX) policy which provides guidelines outlining grade clarification and appeal policies and procedures if a student feels their test was not graded accurately.
Revised Physicianship Policy
CCEP approved modifying the existing Physicianship policy to provide more clear expectations for students. The new policy emphasizes feedback discussions with students via coaching and also clarifies the physicianship form appeal process. The consequences for professionalism lapses will now be based on their severity or persistence and not on the number of Physicianship Evaluation Forms that students receive. The work on this policy took place over the past year and was informed by the Professional Behaviors Task Force which convened in 2022 and was chaired by Drs. Margo Vener and Kewchang Lee.
School of Medicine Auditing Guidelines
The UCSF School of Medicine established course auditing guidelines in partnership with the UCSF Registrar. Auditing is only allowed for large group activities. People seeking to audit courses must seek written permission from the course instructor and Associate Dean for Curriculum.

When it comes to surgery, is "technologically advanced" always superior? Last summer, Chloe Sales (MS3) had the opportunity to explore this question in Kathmandu, Nepal, at the world-renowned Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology - whose doctors pioneered the use of a low-cost, low-tech procedure that's saved the vision of countless patients.
In the first of three "Nepal Episodes," on the The Spark: Medical Education for Curious Minds, Chloe speaks with UCSF ophthalmologists Neeti Parikh, MD and Madeline Yung, MD, about their experience in Nepal - including training in this surgical technique and expanding access to it in California. Chloe also chats with Nabin Kumar Rai, Director of Programs at Tilganga Institute, about lessons they can learn from each other.
Listen now to the latest season of The Spark: Medical Education for Curious Minds.
You can also read about and see photos of Chloe's experience at the Tilganga Institute.
Students interested in traveling internationally should check out resources at the bottom of the UCSF Global Hub webpage.
