Tony Scinta

Earlier this week I had the honor of providing the Office of the Provost’s update for Professional Development Day. I provided the latest data on some key institutional metrics relating to enrollment and student success, and had the pleasure of providing updates on the accomplishments and ongoing work of many of the areas that report to the provost’s office. If you couldn't attend on Monday, don’t fret – I’ve got a copy of my presentation for you and would be happy to answer any questions that you might have.

As always, there wasn't enough time to cover all the positive updates from around campus. I wanted to share a few more items from the provost's office here.

First up, Tom Nicholas, our Director of Workforce Development, has been on fire lately. The Scorpion STEAM Academy this summer was a resounding success. My son, who can be a harsh critic, participated and reported that it was an all-around fantastic experience. Not one to rest on his laurels, Tom has been hard at work with several other major projects. The first, which begins today, is the Nevada State Leadership Academy, which offers seven non-credit-bearing classes, including Principles of Leadership; Leading with Social & Emotional IQ; and Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion. The second project is a Cybersecurity Academy, beginning on September 6th, which we're doing in partnership with Nevada Partners in North Las Vegas. The final project is a deep dive into credit for prior learning (CPL), which would allow Nevada State to grant college credit for certain kinds of training and experience. We're still in the research portion of this project, but similar efforts at other universities have proven to be very helpful for non-traditional students and veterans.

Furthermore, Angela Brommel, our Senior Advisor and Executive Director of the Arts, has some important updates as well:

Nevada State Galleries

If you walk through the 2nd floor gallery in CEB, you'll get an early look at the exhibition that opens next week. Find Your Folklife is an innovative photography exhibition exploring cultural identity. Curated by Rebecca Snetselaar of the Nevada Arts Council Folklife Program, this exhibition illustrates the vitality of folklife, folk arts, and folk communities in Nevada. The Arts Offsite: Scorpions Steam Academy

This August the Office for the Arts partnered with Workforce Development and its Scorpions Steam Academy to host youth art exhibitions at local Boys and Girls Clubs to showcase the final works of the inaugural camp participants. We're looking forward to exhibiting this work on campus later this fall.

Have a great start to the semester!

Academic Faculty Handbook

Over the past year I've worked with a number of people across campus to create a campus-wide academic faculty handbook. It directs faculty to key resources and processes, and provides important information about a range of topics. It will be updated each summer to stay current.

Thank you to everyone who provided content or feedback, particularly Betty Kim, Ruby Ortega, and Molly Appel.

Policy Updates

Resources for AI and Teaching

The CTLE has begun creating a module of resources related to AI and pedagogy. They'll add more as the semester goes on. They are also offering an AI badge that faculty can earn by completing three AI-related workshops/talks.

Rachel Herzl-Betz (Writing Center Director) also sent me this webinar recording about AI and teaching, which is free to view.

Community Open House

The City of Henderson will host an open house as part of their College Area Livable Centers Study. This is a great opportunity to provide feedback on local land development planning. See their flyer for details. Food and drinks will be served.

2023 NSSE Results

Each year, our students participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). This year's reports are in, and this week I'm highlighting the overall results. The first part of the report focuses on results from first-year students; the later part of the report is about seniors. For each item, a blue (up) triangle indicates our students scored higher than comparison groups; a purple (down) triangle means they scored lower.

Overall, we did quite well; our students reported higher levels of a number of academic and co-curricular items and sense of belonging at the institution. Not surprisingly, they are much more likely to work, and to work more hours. They are also more likely to report caring for others.

The report is full of information, so take a look.

Get Things Done (Mostly) Stress-Free

I was so thrilled on Monday to host a session on Project Management during Professional Development Day. If you couldn’t make it, here’s a copy of my presentation. The last slide is a big, long list of links to all the forms we discussed. Take a look and have some fun with stakeholder lists and risk management, two of my favorite project management tasks.

CourseDog Update

In case you missed my other presentation on CourseDog, I’m happy to report that things are moving along on schedule. Most of the work right now in behind-the-scenes, so Janice Le-Nguyen has been doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Once we’re ready to start taking the new software for a spin, we will have more to share about how it will help us schedule classes more efficiently.

Peer-to-Peer Support

I can’t remember if I thanked the team who put together our Peer-to-Peer support training, but even if I did it once, I am going to do it again. Kudos to Cristina Caputo and Rachel Herzl-Betz for all their work leading the effort to design two stellar days of training for our student workers. I also want to thank their teams for all the work they put into the training, including Rikki Gaddy, Maira Franco Hernandez, Chris Petras, and britty Cox.

Core Curriculum Update

We’re making such good progress on adding ELOs! If you look at our master list you’ll see that we’ve completed nearly half of the available Core courses. My goal is to get ELOs added to all 171 classes by Fall 2024. In related news, Nicole Espinoza, our Director of Assessment, has been doing some amazing work to chart the ELOs and develop efficient ways of assessing them.
