Continuing Recovery from Helene

National attention has already moved on from the devastation caused in Augusta by Helene, and formal emergency assistance efforts are receding. But of course many of us are still deep in the destruction from the storm and a long way from having recovered. We have practical things we must do, claims to file, workers to hire, money to find to pay for all of it. And we have to navigate all of that while we also have profound spiritual and emotional needs: we are exhausted and sometimes discouraged or isolated. And through all of this, we are not-quite-at-home while home is partially or fully destroyed or even just damaged. As the church, we are continuing to do our ministries as best as we can, but all of life has been affected. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the parish clergy for prayer, a listening ear, or what practical help we can give. Please give yourself space in your own church ministries - no one is expecting things to be back to normal or to run like we're used to. And if a gift of time or talent or money that you usually give to the church is too much right now, just let us know and we can find other ways to continue our essential ministries, to do as much as we can for each other and our neighbors while we ourselves are struggling and grieving. The clergy and parish leadership want to be in this with you, for the good and the bad.

MEET AUBREY HINKSON

Welcoming Aubrey Hinkson

as Director of Children and Youth Formation

Saint Paul's is delighted to welcome Aubrey Hinkson as our new Director of Children and Youth Formation. This has been a challenging time to start a new job in ministry, but Aubrey has already leapt in to our work with our younger members with enthusiasm and skill. You can get to know Aubrey a little in this email, but I encourage you also to pull her aside on Sunday. All of us who have already gotten a taste of the gifts she brings to the staff know that you won't regret getting to know her better and finding ways to join in the ministry she is beginning.

A short bio

Aubrey started attending Saint Paul’s in 2021. She grew up just across the river in Aiken, SC and resides with her husband, two children and dog in North Augusta.

Aubrey has a passion for working with children and ensuring they feel encouraged and supported to grow into who God has created them to be. An expert in learning and play, Aubrey owns Orange Otter Toy Store in North Augusta. She is also an instructor in the Hull College of Business at Augusta University. She received her Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Master of Science in Marketing from Clemson University.

Contact Aubrey at ahinkson@saintpauls.org.

6 Questions to Get to Know Aubrey

What is your why?

Everything I do is inspired by my family, my wonderful husband and our two kids, Parker (5.5) and Dawson (1.5). We also have our sweet pup, Rupert (12). From the toy store to serving in the church, they are my reason and my why.

Why did we choose Saint Paul's as our church home?

I began visiting with my mom, Patsy Davis, in 2020 before the pandemic. I loved the Celtic service and felt at home and welcomed immediately. My daughter Parker has been involved in children's formation and choir since 2021 and we had our son baptized by Father Eric in January of this year.

Favorite bible verse?

Ephesians 4:32

…Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children and live in love as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

This verse speaks to me because it keeps it simple. Love others, be kind, and when you do you glorify God.

Favorite place to be?

I love the ocean. The beach is my happy place, and the natural scenery is always humbling. I also love hunting for sharks' teeth with my hubby.

Favorite thing to listen to?

I love to laugh so I listen to a lot of comedy podcasts. Nate Bargatze is my favorite comedian. I love all music and what I listen to depends on my mood. It could be anything from Elton John to Linkin Park and everything in between. My favorite song right now is Royal Otis’s cover of “Linger” by the Cranberries.

Who do you cheer for?

My favorite team to cheer for is my Clemson Tigers. I cannot wait until Dawson is a bit older and we can enjoy games as a family and show the kids where mom and dad went to school.

FALL STEWARDSHIP GETS UNDERWAY THIS WEEKEND

Our fall giving campaign begins this weekend, though somewhat delayed and rearranged by the hurricane. While we've all been impacted by Helene, we've seen love in action as Saint Paul's mission carries on through the long aftermath of the storm. We are a beacon of hope for our parishioners, friends, and unknown neighbors. On Sunday our stewardship honorary chairs, Cobbs and Minta Nixon, will offer an important message at the 11:00 service on supporting the work of the church. The Nixons are longtime members of Saint Paul's and have a unique perspective from which to consider how we return to God a portion of God's gifts to us.

In the coming days please be on the lookout for an invitation to attend a stewardship gathering. These gatherings were originally scheduled to take place in the homes of our parishioners, but as debris remains piled up in our neighborhoods and repairs are still underway, we'll instead meet in the Berlin Room. At these gatherings we'll have the opportunity to talk about the vital work of Saint Paul's and how our generous giving makes our mission possible.

Caring Prayer

October 24, 3:30 PM, The Chapel

Caring Prayer is for anyone who wants to pray and needs support, and goodness knows many of us need support and community in the aftermath of Helene. Caring Prayer is an opportunity to gather in prayer to support each other freely in whatever challenges we are facing. The group remains appropriate for caregivers, and is also now open for anyone who is mourning, lives with chronic illness, has lost their job, or faces any kind of challenge that might be helped by love and prayer. We gather on the fourth Thursday of each month at 3:30 pm in the chapel to pray Evening Prayer together, check in with each other, and provide mutual support. Contact Fr. Eric for more information.

Save the Date: CSRA Walk for Water

November 9

The CSRA Walk for Water returns this year and once again Saint Paul’s is the midway point of the walk. We’re excited to support this event and invite you to join this important work.

In this season of Thanksgiving, the walk is a tangible way to increase gratitude for our many blessings and love for our neighbors. We will gather at the SRP Park on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM. We will walk with empty pails from the SRP Park baseball field in North Augusta to the Saint Paul’s parking lot. We will fill our pails and walk back to the park.

The Walk for Water puts a creative twist on the typical “fundraising walk.” This walk connects us with the trek billions make every single day to carry home untreated water for basic subsistence.

You can support this event by joining our walking team, volunteering to serve as hospitality at Saint Paul’s, or giving to our Saint Paul’s team. More details to come.

"As followers of Jesus, we are called not simply to have hope, but to live the hope within us as we put our faith into action. This is why we named our strategic planning process “Living Hope.” Our visioning process is primarily intended to help the people of the Diocese discern how the Holy Spirit is leading us into the future."
