BHNA’s National Night Out on August 6th was hosted at Immanuel (3215 E. 3rd Street) where BHNA hosted FREE ICE CREAM to all participants (and passersby). LB Police Department was present to mingle with residents, answer questions and provide giveaways.

Bluff Height’s Community FORUM at the Wine Crush on Wednesday, September 11th provided refreshments and delicious appetizers and focused on neighborhood safety. We also had representatives from the LB Police Department present along with CA District 2 (Cindy Allen’s) office to field questions, concerns and report on neighborhood crime stats and provide safety information.

BHNA collaborated with Long Beach Public Works to host a Street Clean-up Event on Saturday, Sept 28 at Rose Park Coffee Roasters. BHNA sponsored FREE COFFEE for all participating volunteers who helped remove trash and debris from alleys, sidewalks and curbs.  This was a great way to help support our local business while providing opportunities for neighbors to help to keep our neighborhood clean!

BHNA will be supporting our Bixby Park FREE Neighborhood Halloween Party on Sunday, October 27th at Bixby Park from 2 to 4 PM. Parents are encouraged to bring the kids for lots of games, costume contests, giveaways and HALLOWEEN FUN! BHNA will be sponsoring a table with mini pumpkin decorating (while supplies last). Get there early to get your pumpkin!

Finally … MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!!!

BHNA is planning to host a HOLIDAY PARTY at La Parolaccia on Sunday, December 8th from 4:30 – 6:30 PM. This will be a great way to give back to our community for a successful year of volunteering and fundraising. BHNA will provide light appetizers and snacks and also collect canned and boxed foods for our holiday food drive. More details will follow ….

Superstitious Architecture: Witch Elements in Buildings

By Val Pfeifer

Exploring Long Beach, I found many superstitious elements incorporated into buildings, such as witches' hat, witches’ windows, and witches’ chimneys. Some years ago, I found witches stairs in a house in New England. Perhaps there’s even a set here in one of Long Beach’s many historic homes.

A witches’ hat is an architectural style that resembles a black, wide-brimmed hat with a pointed top, usually in the form of a turret. A witches’ window is an attic window angled to follow the slope of the roof, slanting crookedly. A witches’ chimney is a sloping chimney. The belief was that witches could not fly through a sloped window, or go down a sloped chimney. There are at least two different types of witches’ stairs. Wikipedia shows witches’ stairs as an alternate tread of stairs. The other stairs have removable treads. In the early years of New England’s colonial development, the story goes that parents sent their kids to the attic to sleep, than they removed the treads and the kids could not come down and the witches could not come up.

Throughout history people constructed figures such as lions, phoenixes or other architectural elements on the buildings to keep away the evil spirits, witches among them. These elements were observed on houses built in the twentieth century, even though Witch Trials were held back in 1692, in Salem Massachusetts.

Each issue we will publish a photograph from our neighborhood. This photo of Patty the Guinea pig out for a ride in Bluff Heights was submitted by Donna Sievers.

It's really simple to trim your "Waste-Line!" All you need to do is collect your e-waste, hazardous waste, and/or old tire waste and bring it to one of three local collection centers under the conditions set by the City of Long Beach on this flyer.
