Transportation history is spooky fun at Owls Head’s Night at the Museum!
On Saturday, Oct. 26, the exhibition halls at the Owls Head Transportation Museum will host an
array of historic “ghosts” and activities fit for any young mad scientist! This returning family
friendly event is free to all, and will deliver a night of learning, exploration and some haunted fun
– just in time for Halloween!
Night at the Museum: Living History will feature reenactors emulating some of transportation’s greatest pioneers! From Nichola Tesla to Bertha Benz, children will delight in the
stories these colorful, costumed characters share about their lives, and how their ingenious innovations shaped the way we move throughout the world today.
Not your average ghouls! As you tour the mysterious galleries of the museum, be on the lookout for two of transportation’s great female pioneers: Bertha Benz and Alice Ramsey. Bertha Benz was the first person to take a long-distance automotive road trip, traveling from across
Germany with her two sons Richard and Eugene in tow! Alice Huyler Ramsey was the first
woman to drive an automobile across the United States from coast to coast, a feat she
completed on August 7, 1909.
Haunted Halls! Roaming the ghostly exhibit spaces of the museum will be a bevy of historic
specters who span significant time periods of transportation history: flappers, WWI soldiers,
artists, stagecoach drivers, pilots, early cyclists, mechanics and more will be making
appearances. Someone snuck into the museum and charmed a few inanimate transportation
items to life: discuss a project you’re working on, with a tool box! Then have an illuminating
conversation with a traffic light – one night of the year, only!
Calling All Spooky Scientists A fun-loving and slightly silly Mad Scientist will be leading
experiments throughout the evening from her spooky STEM laboratory, leading young learners
in activities which highlight science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Is there a young
witch in your family? They might enjoy the broom flying station, where participants design their
very own “broomstick” and launch it to see how far it can travel through air! More activities will
range from Paper Airplane Challenge to Monster Mash Robot Bowling and Spooky Spider
Parachutes!
Costumes encouraged! Who will you dress up for the Night at the Museum? We can’t wait to
see the creative costumes you and your family dream up! If you’re saving your Halloween look
for the big night on the 31st, just come as you are! There will be festive treats and treasures for
all of our guests!
Mark your calendars, and get ready for a ghostly night of fun, as we travel back through time at
Owls Head Transportation Museum!

Guided hike at Crooked Farm Preserve with Coastal Rivers
Photo: Naturalist Sarah Gladu will lead a guided hike at Crooked Farm Preserve in Bristol on October 18.
Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust naturalist Sarah Gladu will lead a hike at Crooked Farm Preserve in Bristol from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 18.
During this leisurely hike, walkers will enjoy fall foliage along a lovely stretch of the Pemaquid River and take a close look at mosses, lichens, and other special features of the marshy habitat there.
Crooked Farm Preserve offers nearly 130 acres of forest, wetlands, and open fields, and is open to the public for walking, boating, hunting, and fishing. The loop trail follows a wooded stretch of the Pemaquid River for over a mile. The river’s gravel streambeds are spawning habitat for game fish, and its wetlands provide edge habitat favored by moose, white-tailed deer, mink, raccoon, fisher, fox, and otter.
This program is free of charge, thanks to member support. Registration is required at coastalrivers.org/events.

Donated conservation easement in Bristol protects clamming access on Johns Bay
Photos: (1) A conservation easement donated by Margo and Michael Hope of Bristol permanently protects access to these productive clam flats for Bristol clammers. (2) The Hope family has allowed local shellfish harvesters access through their field to the clam flats for decades, and their recently donated conservation easement will protect this access even when the property changes hands.
Access to productive clam flats on the East Branch of Johns Bay in Bristol is now permanently protected for local clammers, thanks to the donation of a 5-acre conservation easement by Margo and Michael Hope to Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust in July.
Located off Harrington Road, this waterfront property has been a traditional point of access for clammers for decades. The conservation easement not only protects access for those with a Bristol shellfish license, but it also contributes to the protection of water quality in Johns Bay.
“As there become fewer stretches of undeveloped land, providing the gift of access gives us deep satisfaction” said Michael Hope. The Hope family has owned this land since 1947, Hope says. Early in the family’s ownership, local shellfish harvesters asked permission to drive to the shore of the Hope’s farm to help with the task of hauling heavy loads of clams up the hill. Since then, local shellfish harvesters regularly use the field for access to the clam flats.
A conservation easement is a voluntary legal agreement between a landowner and a conservation organization, such as a land trust, that details how the land will be managed in the future. The agreement limits development, though sometimes a house lot or two is retained. It describes other future uses of the land, like sustainable forestry, trails, farming, or, as in this case, clamming.
The landowner can tailor a conservation easement to fit their needs and management goals, as the Hopes have done. Many conservation easements leave the choice to allow public access up to the landowner, but the Hopes want to ensure that Bristol clammers can continue to access the clam flats, so this is specified in their easement.
In turn, the land trust is responsible for making sure that the guidelines laid out in the agreement are followed over time, even if the land is sold or passed on to an heir.
The Hopes’ donation of a conservation easement fits in with their broader concern for wildlife and water quality. They manage the field for pollinators, and also maintain healthy buffers of trees and shrubs along the shore and streams on the property to limit runoff into the bay.

Thank you for bringing food security to those in need through the annual Bangor Savings Bank Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive!
We’re thrilled to spread the news that our locations are jam-packed with over 26,000 jars, donated in September by customers, local businesses, community organizations, and employees.
To those who donated – thank you! Because of the incredible community support for the PB&J Drive, over 26,000 jars of peanut butter & jelly jars have been collected since the drive began in 2012. Did you know that nearly 2.5 million PB&J sandwiches have been made in over ten years? This is incredible! Thank you for making a significant and meaningful difference for those experiencing food insecurity in our communities.
This year’s PB&J donations are being delivered to local food insecurity programs throughout Northern New England. The remarkable support for the PB&J Drive each year shows that working together strengthens our communities.

WILD MEDLEY OF PERFORMERS TO APPEAR ON STAGE
FOR THE 2024 WALDOBORO TALENT SHOW NOV. 2nd.
| |
WALDOBORO, ME—October 14, 2024— The Waldo Theatre has finalized the lineup for Waldoboro’s 2024 Talent Show on Saturday, November 2 at 6:00pm, and the Waldoboro Fire Department is one of its headliners. Joining them in the program are numbers by Morganne Price and her dog Kraken, Derek Booker and the EMS, and, if luck prevails, a trio of clam harvesters led by Abden Simmons. It will be a community evening for all ages.
Other highlights include the Tea for Two Tappers (former students of Savion Glover and Gregory Hines); Lindsay Smith and Conrad Winslow performing Sondheim; 17-year old Adrian Quinn playing Chopin’s Waltz in A minor; and the Family of God Quintet from First Baptist Church.
Most of the acts are musical, with a ukelele duet, a jazzy riff or two, several original songs for voice and guitar, and vocals by locals Michelle Carter, Rebecca Brackett, Mauri Lord, Hannah Basham, Becky Libby, Erasmus Moore, 12-year old Helena Strong, Scott Simpson, Rob Clark, Pat & Tish Brundage, and the Hayseed Highlanders. Those numbers will be peppered with acts by Ken Stevenson and Sponge Bob Square Pants; Dancemainea; Alexa Stark styling a fashion runway show drawn from from Waldoboro’s Clothing Closet; and a poem, “A Song for Waldoboro,” written and recited by Melissa Barbour.
As MC Sam Pennington says, “I can’t believe this line-up. With free admission, people need to get their tickets early since there’s only 290 seats available. I wouldn’t be surprised if we sell out!” Contributions in any amount, which can be made online while reserving tickets, will support the Waldo’s variety of community programs. ADA seating is limited and should be reserved in advance.
As organizer and producer Rebecca Cooney says, “This is a night to bring everyone under one roof -- singing, clapping, dancing in the aisles and just plain supporting each other – and at its end, walking out sprinkled with fairy dust.”
Cooney added, “I’ve dreamed of this ever since I walked into the Waldo two years ago to volunteer as an usher. I was amazed at this theater’s potential, right in the center of town, for drawing all parts of our town together, because I am in love with Waldoboro. And what better time than now?”
This evening was an idea long in the making. This past March, Waldo board member Michael Amico seized on the idea. With his support and counsel, the theater agreed. From there, other volunteers joined in. George Bates and Willy Wong designed the graphics and posters. Waldo Theatre photographer and filmmaker Nathan Butler has created a series of “commercials” about five eccentric Waldobororians. And stage manager Ashley Steeves, of Bath’s Resurgence Dance Company and stage manager for Dancemainea, is managing the ebb and flow of talent, many of whom have never been on stage before.
“But we’re prepared. We have a powerhouse of tech professionals who are ready to handle any and all happy surprises that might pop up,” says Executive Director Susan Hodder. “We hope the community will turn out to support the brave souls sharing their talents for the entertainment of their friends and neighbors. This kind of programming is historic: a way for rural communities to gather and celebrate together. The last time The Waldo held a talent show was in 1981, but with this kind of talent on hand, you can be sure you won’t have to wait that long for the next one!”
Tickets are available online at thewaldotheatre.org. Doors open at 5:30. Admission is Free, but donations are welcome. Concessions will be available.
