John Wesley's voting advice: "To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy"

A Note from Pastor Andy

Praise the Lord!

Sing to the Lord a new song,

his praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel be glad in its Maker;

let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.

(Psalm 149:1-2)

This week we start a new series called “Children of Zion.” Over the next several weeks, as we draw closer to election day, we will be “Celebrating the Reign of God in the midst of a broken world.”

“Zion” is a metaphor for God’s Reign on Earth, particularly in the prophet Isaiah. During a tumultuous election cycle, it is vital to remember that sovereignty belongs to God. The “Kingdom” or “Reign” of God is a theme throughout Scripture, beginning with the prophets and continuing through Revelation.

The series will include several highlight moments. This Sunday, October 20th, we will dedicate a unique quilt to be given to Karen Raborn, Director of Kwasha School and Maplewood UMC member.

On October 27th, the Rev. Jim Bryan will be our guest preacher. Jim is a retired Elder in the United Methodist Church, a life-long activist for peace and justice, and it just so happens, my Dad!

November 3rd is “All Saints Sunday,” and we will remember the saints of the congregation who have died in the past year. The presence of the saints is a source of assurance as we approach the end of the election cycle.

Tuesday, November 5th at 7:00 pm in the Eden Seminary chapel, there will be a service of Holy Communion. This “Election Night Communion” service is a connectional ministry of Maplewood, Unity, and Webster United Methodist Churches.

And on November 24th, the series will culminate with worship on “Reign of Christ Sunday,” the final Sunday of the liturgical year.

Much will happen during the six weeks of this worship series. It has already been ugly, hateful, and violent. And there are no signs that will abate in the upcoming weeks. In contrast, the prophet Isaiah calls God’s people to be awake and ready, to shake off the dust and rise up for the cause of peace, joy, and salvation.

“Let the children of Zion rejoice!”

Ad Council Proposes New Mission Statement

“Maplewood United Methodist Church creates spaces where people can  have authentic encounters with Christ, discover their Spiritual gifts, and use them for God’s glory.”

At their September meeting, the Administrative Council continued discussing the congregation’s mission. The statement above comes from a sentence on the “I’m New” page of the website. The Council believes it is actually a statement that fittingly describes the mission of the congregation. Please give prayerful consideration to this statement for the next few weeks. If you have any input, please contact an Administrative Council member. The Council will vote on the statement at the November meeting. The proposed statement would replace the current Mission Statement: “Feeding the community - body, mind, heart, and spirit - through the love of Christ.” The official Vision Statement would remain “A community whose body, mind, heart, and spirit are fed through the love of Christ.

Bits and Pieces

It is that time of the year again to join our BOO CREW!

The crew will greet Trick or Treaters at MUMC and pass out treats on Halloween. You can sign up for the Boo Crew “24 on the easels in the Narthex (room behind the sanctuary) or the website/app. Donations of candy and non-candy treats can be brought to the church. To sign up to help or donate, CLICK HERE

Please meet at the church by 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31st. If you have any questions, contact the church office or email Brittany (brittany.l@maplewoodumc.org.

Don't forget to bring your empty 16 oz. water bottles to church

Build A Gift is in need of 80 empty 16-ounce water bottles with lids. Clean and dry would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for supporting this event. Place under the easel in the back of the Sanctuary (Narthex) by the end of November.

Coming in November

As in previous years, the Maplewood-Richmond Heights school district will distribute Thanksgiving boxes for local families. If you would like to sponsor a box or two or three, the price this year is $50, but partial boxes can be purchased, also.

Election Night Communion, so go to the polls, then come to the table.

This campaign season has been brutally divisive. Here is a chance to be a part of something different, something better, something more. On election night, Tuesday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m., all are welcome and encouraged to gather in the chapel on the campus of Eden Theological Seminary to worship, and to celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion together. This service is a collaboration of Maplewood, Unity, and Webster United Methodist Churches, and it is open to all. The unity of the sacrament is stronger than the divisiveness of an election.
