RX for Resilience: New Year

Happy Lunar New Year and welcome to the Year of the Dragon!

Yesterday (Feb. 10) marked the Lunar New Year, a holiday filled with traditions and cultural significance for people worldwide. Lunar New Year begins with the second new moon to occur after the Winter Solstice each year, meaning it typically falls between Jan. 21 and Feb. 20. Thousands of years of tradition carry this special time to the modern day

During this period, families and friends gather to eat traditional foods and pay tribute to their ancestors, share in cultural exchange and treasured family time. Many also celebrate with fireworks or parades featuring colorful dragons or lions and/or light night lanterns with wishes that float skyward for the year ahead. Gifts are exchanged, including traditional money-filled hong bao, or "red envelopes." Celebrations last for 15 days and end on the night of the next full moon, which will fall on Feb. 24 this year.

Like many of their Chinese compatriots, the Shenzhou-17 astronauts aboard the Tiangong space station celebrated Lunar New Year with a special feast including smoked fish, scallion pancakes, roast duck, glutinous rice cakes, tomato and egg soup, dumplings, sweet rice porridge, mango, sesame buns, fruit juices and more. They return to Earth in mid-April, so their celebrations are far-flung this year!
The Dragon is the only legendary creature out of the animals of the Chinese zodiac and symbolizes good luck, strength, intelligence, and good fortune. The Dragon also carries strong cultural and historical significance in China, sometimes serving as a symbol of the emperors and empires of China's rich 5,000-year history.

GlobalMindED’s FSUN leader, Janet Salazar, shares this video message with the GlobalMindED Community. We are grateful to Janet and her collaboration with GlobalMindED and the Foundation to Support the United Nations. May the blessings of this New Year be plentiful to all in our communities, our nation, and our world.
