HEROES & HELPERS

Last Thursday night, the Sunapee Fire Dept. answered the call when a fierce 5-alarm fire struck the Lake Sunapee Manor on Prospect Hill Road in Georges Mills. Neighboring Fire Depts. quickly joined forces and worked thru the night to safely evacuate all residents and extinguish the blaze.  Despite the frigid temperatures, neighbors rallied round to provide shelter for those displaced and warm food & beverages for the firefighters. As of this writing, cause of the fire is unknown. Our appreciation to Barbara Chalmers for sharing this history of the Lake Sunapee Manor.

A SUNAPEE LANDMARK LOST

Last night, the only surviving 19th century Lake Sunapee hotel from the grand resort era burned down. It has been recently known as Lake Sunapee Manor, a 14-unit apartment building at 27 Prospect Hill Road in Georges Mills. The Sunapee Fire Department with assistance from many other fire departments worked to control the blaze through the night. All occupants got out safely.

Many may remember this as Conrad Manor, that operated from 1954 to 1967 as a hotel / ski lodge and restaurant run by John T. Conrad. He turned the attached stable into THE BARN, a dance hall where local bands played rock’n roll in the 1960s. The main building was built in 1880 by Willard Chase and his brother-in-law Alfred Martin. Called Pleasant Home, it was Georges Mills first summer hotel. The 3-story wing with the mansard roof was added by Chase & Martin for more guest rooms in 1889. Pleasant Home was known for its great food and many guests stayed for the whole summer season. During the 1920s to 1940s, the hotel changed hands a few times and was renamed Grand View, Hutton’s Tavern, Slade’s Inn, and finally Harbor House before it became Conrad Manor. Posted are photos of the burned building and two from its glory days. Sunapee Historical Society Facebook

HOW TO HELP THOSE EFFECTED BY THE FIRE

Thanks, so much, to the MANY people who have offered to help and to those who have already sent gift cards, food, and clothing to those who were affected by Friday night's fire in Georges Mills. We were told over and over that just knowing people cared made a big difference.

There were 12 units, housing 19 individuals. No children were living in the building.

While some have found it, there are still people looking for permanent housing. If you know of any affordable housing in the area, please let me know.

Specific items lost in the fire were

1. Steel-toed work boots size 13 & socks

2. Milwaukee 18v tool set & carpentry tools

3, Carhart jacket XL

4. Long sleeved shirts women's M, L, 0X & 2X

5. Long sleeved shirts men's M, L, XL & 2X

6. Pants/jeans/sweatpants assorted adult sizes

Now that people have a place to live, we will be looking for furniture in good condition. However, we need a place to collect it. Does anyone have dry storage that people could drop off and pick up furnishings as needed?

Some people have no way to cook or refrigerate right now. Restaurant cards (pizza/McDonalds/Dunkin) would be very helpful.

Gift cards - Walmart, Amazon and Target gift cards can be used to re-stock the basics. Grocery cards can stock the cupboards and gas cards can help get people back and forth while they search for housing and re-establish their lives.

Please email me at welfare@town.sunapee.nh.us for any offers, questions or concerns. Thanks, again for all your support!
