January 2023

Dear Friend,

Happy new year to you and your families!

When my wife and I became parents, we knew it was going to be a team effort. Thankfully we have been nourished by the profound wisdom of Ignatius, the Exercises, and Ignatian Spirituality.

Personally, the Ignatian examen helps me witness how God is working in my daughters’ lives and how they are growing with His guidance. (It’s not always easy to see, especially now that they are teenagers!)

It also helps me discover that I cannot pretend to have control over everything my kids decide or do. For me, this is one of the most difficult things. Undoubtedly, I feel an invitation to grow in freedom and perhaps indifference.

Back in 2022, we invited OIS moms to tell us how Ignatian Spirituality has helped them as parents for a special Mother's Day video. It’s very moving. I invite you to watch it again.

I also wish to invite any young parents in their 20s-40s to be part of our upcoming Jesuit Connections program, Parenting Through the Lens of Ignatian Spirituality: A Community Conversation. This three-part online series will be an opportunity for parents inspired by Ignatian spirituality to come together to reflect on the joys and challenges of raising children. Fr. John Siberski, SJ, will open the gathering with a short reflection. Please feel free to join us for one or all of these community gatherings.

Let us keep praying for one another, and for our kids.

Un abrazo,
Carlos Aedo
