SOUTH BEND EXPANDS:
More Second Chance Employers & Van Transportation?

The South Bend Community Re-Entry Center promotes the successful reintegration of reentrants into the community through rehabilitative programming and by helping reentrants find and keep a good job. 2nd Chance Indiana's Jim Cotterill, Molly Oliver, and Scott Whiting met with Sherm Johnson, the Executive Director of Offender Employment Development for Indiana Department of Correction, and South Bend's Deputy Warden, James Henry, to discuss ways in which 2nd Chance Indiana can help them connect with more second chance employers, and potentially develop a transportation program to get reentrants to and from work--avoiding absenteeism and job loss.

IU's 'Net Impact'
To Survey Reentrant Beds For 2nd Chance Indiana

A number of highly capable Net Impact volunteers from IU Business School have engaged with 2nd Chance Indiana's Executive V.P. Nancy Cotterill to undertake a survey of transitional beds available to those reentering from prison or jail sentences in the nine county Central Indiana area. Ten percent of Indiana reentrants (about 26,000 annually) have nowhere to go after release and need a free or low cost place to stay, an address to receive mail, and a bed, to provide a staging area for life as they get a job, and handle the miriad of details required after release.
The survey will not only count and locate beds, but will indicate whether the reentrant must qualify as needing care for mental or addiction support, supply information on available length of stay, costs, and more. It is our hope that over the years we can quantify this information in counties across the state to help all Indiana reentrants in their passage to a successful future.

INDIANA COUNTIES CARE:
Hendricks County Joins
Effort To Increase Reentrant Employment

2nd Chance Indiana's Molly Oliver met with Bridgett Collins-George, the Director of Hendricks County Corrections, and its case managers, Colin Bishop, Taylor Lewis, WaQuanza L. Woods, and Yolanda Smith. Studies show that a good job found soon after release can drive recidivism down from an average of 67% to around 8%. But far too many reentrants have no reliable transportation which is the No. 1 reason for job loss due to absenteeism.. Hendricks County officials are working closely with 2CI to develop options for reentrant employment that includes needed transportation to and from job sites, helping to secure a solid future for reentrants and their families.

Why Support 2nd Chance Indiana?
2nd Chance Indiana's team works to reduce recidivism and rebuild lives through the dignity of work. In the process we believe that our efforts can also have a profound, multi-generational impact by reducing poverty, crime, and homelessness.
Our major focus is to assist the thousands of inmates returning to communities across Indiana after long-term incarceration. 2nd Chance Indiana provides mentored job training inside the correctional facility, and a jobs website for those with a criminal record, 2ndChanceIN.com, which is filled with job opportunities and support agencies to help reentrants get back to work, support themselves and their families, and contribute to the economic improvement of their neighborhoods.

How You Can Support Jobs for Justice- Involved Individuals
Support For Reentrants After Incarcertion:
Since 2017 UNITE INDY, now 2nd Chance Indiana, has provided a free web-based system, 2ndChanceIN.com, that connects those released from incarceration with jobs offered by our 45 employer partners, willing to hire people with a criminal record and pay them a living wage.
The site also offers a huge network of support organizations that can help with housing, drug abatement, licensing, clothing and so much more.

A good job found quickly after release from incarceration drives down recidivism about 90%, according to studies. Unemployment is connected to poverty, a criminal record, and re-incarceration. Our poorest neighborhoods contain many who have not been able to get good jobs because they have a criminal record, but 2nd Chance Indiana not only connects them with jobs, it also provides van transportation to many sites to help those who do not have affordable or reliable transportation. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment is extremely high and poverty remains the overwhelming cause of violence and lack of opportunity for children.

You can help us to help a reentrant today, Here! To know more, go to 2nd Chance Indiana now. There are a number of choices that are all secure and safe. By sending your fully tax deductible gift* now we can have a greater impact meeting needs in our community.
Many, many thanks!
