UNEXPECTED GALLERIES

Craig Hinca

Visual Artist

Salina, Kansas

There can be days as visual artists when we grow tired of looking for ways to show our work. Sometimes, our garage, basement, or spare room becomes a storeroom or a graveyard for containers or stacks of work that simply needs to be shown. For years, I have thought that this is done in gallery, or a formal art exhibition.

While there is truth to this, I have been on a scavenger hunt to look for other venues. I stumbled into one “gallery” space when a friend asked me to stage their home for sale. It was a large space, and I was inspired to look for local art that could be for sale. This opportunity came, and I was able to help facilitate sales for two artists in addition to creating art specifically for this home myself. In fact, the house was photographed only hours after I completed and hung some of the works! An empty home became a local art gallery with views online and exposure to a number of potential clients.

Fortunately, in the community of Salina, I have discovered much original local artwork in churches, hospital rooms, nursing homes, and businesses downtown. These are some of the places that I have recently seen enhanced with unique touches of local artists bringing beauty and expression into rooms and waiting areas. So consider yourself invited to explore our community and discover an “unexpected gallery” for you and space for your work.
