Perpetuating Kindness, Compassion and Support: Sam Lalanne's Journey Breaking Barriers in Diversity & Inclusion Leadership

In February, GlobalMindED celebrates Black History Month by highlighting influential black voices. Meet Sam Lalanne. Sam is Morgan Stanley’s Co-Head of Diversity & Inclusion with a specific focus on the Institutional Securities Group (ISG), Investment Management(MSIM), and International. He brings a global lens to Morgan Stanley’s efforts across these businesses and regions. Sam earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College and lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and two daughters.

Sam's leadership is responsible for Morgan Stanley's sponsorship of the GlobalMindED/ FSUN event last October at the United Nations: Transforming Financial Boundaries in Education, the Environment, and the Economy. We are grateful for his leadership and all of the inclusive leaders at Morgan Stanley, their clients, and partners.

What is your personal/professional story?

I am Morgan Stanley’s Co-Head of Diversity and Inclusion with a specific focus on the Institutional Securities Group (ISG), Investment Management (MSIM), and International. I have the privilege of leading Strategy for the Institute for Inclusion, supporting internal D&I efforts, investments to drive equity in education and careers, and investments in diverse communities and businesses.

As a first-generation American and college graduate, I've embraced the opportunities and responsibilities that come with being a “first” in my family's journey. It is a badge of honor that has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by my immigrant family and a drive to pave the way for future generations.

These dual milestones have shaped my perspective and fueled my passion for diversity and inclusion. I've leveraged my Finance degree from Boston College and Wall Street experience at Citi and Morgan Stanley to break down barriers and create opportunities for others. As Co-Head of Diversity and Inclusion, I strive to empower diverse voices and foster a culture of belonging. My story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the American dream, showcasing how hard work, resilience, and a commitment to inclusivity can lead to personal and professional growth while honoring the sacrifices of those who came before me.

What key moments in your life led you to where you are today?

The support of my family has contributed to many key moments in my life. My parents and older siblings raised me to believe that hard work and determination could overcome any obstacle. They also taught me that building impactful relationships makes the journey easier.

In addition to being raised by a strong family, throughout my life I have had the privilege of being surrounded by amazing mentors. As a first gen student, I would have been completely lost if not for my college mentor who helped me to navigate the experience. I believe in the power of mentorship and I have tried to build and refine mentorship programs in Corporate America for most of my professional career.

Ursula Burns, the first African-American woman to lead an S&P 500 company and the second woman CEO in the history of Xerox, once said that paying it forward “perpetuates a cycle of kindness, compassion, and support”. By helping others, we create a ripple effect that has far-reaching and unpredictable benefits. At Morgan Stanley, I am grateful to oversee several scholarship and mentorship programs for young people across the globe, such as the Morgan Stanley HBCU Scholars Program. The HBCU Scholars Program provides 60 students with full scholarships to three Historically Black Colleges and Universities. One of the foundational elements of unleashing the fullest potential of people of color is educational attainment. Access to higher education enables financial independence, unlocks broader employment opportunities, and ultimately drives wealth creation.

Where does your passion to serve come from?

My passion to serve comes from my faith and my family. At a young age, my parents inculcated in me the value of giving to others.

How can GlobalMindED help you reach your goals?

GlobalMindED’s mission and values are aligned with my personal values. I will continue to support and collaborate with organizations like GlobalMindED that are focused on providing access and opportunity to students from underserved communities.
