Hello All,
Natalie here again - Happy New Year from the Masterson Method Team!
As you'll see below, Jim is playing hooky again - I mean, dealing with blizzard conditions in Fairfield, Iowa. While it's cold here in Seattle (a bracing 22 degrees Fahrenheit), at least it's not snowing! So while he's shoveling out, I'm tending to the newsletter. However, not everyone is working....
| |
At least Jim is bundled up and on the move!
Some are (still) playing...
...and some are not amused!
| |
So wherever you are,
And whatever the weather,
Like Jim and all of us,
Enjoy your cats, horses and dogs!
Natalie

As mentioned above, Jim is on the move! In fact, he's heading to Spain in April to teach the Weekend Seminar. He hasn't taught the class in some time - I wonder if he remembers the order of techniques? There will also be other Instructors and MMCPs assisting, practicing and partying - I mean, studying (the drinks menu perhaps)!
If you are interested in learning the Method from the "horse's mouth," then this course is for you! Check out the details here: Barcelona, Spain, April 13-14.
Interview with Jim Masterson
Interview on YouTube with Jim Masterson
After Jim presented several demos at Equine Affaire in November, we were contacted by Britta for an interview. She had made several short videos during the weekend and was excited about talking with Jim about how MM could be used to help Mustangs.
She interviewed Jim on December 7, 2023. (Also available on the

BHM Book now in Japanese!
Instructor Tomoko Sembongi is doing great work with the Masterson Method® in Japan. We've got more information to share including Tomoko's new bio, photos from courses in 2023 and a link to the publisher's site in Japan for the Beyond Horse Massage book!
Tomoko is a horse loving Japanese MMCP who has spent more than 20 years in the UK. She was bitten by a horse-loving bug as a little girl, and horses have been the only thing that she feels passionate about. During her time in the UK, she worked in the equine industry, with Riding for the Disabled, in the translation industry, and has also kept her own horses. Once she discovered Masterson for her horses, there was no looking back and she became a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner in May 2021. She has enjoyed her learning journey (and her journey is still going on!). She has also translated “Beyond Horse Massage” into Japanese, and is also an Instructor for Japan.
She is off to new pastures and will be moving back to her home country of Japan in late spring 2024. Until then she is based in England, East Anglia near Newmarket, covering Newmarket, Cambridge and beyond.
She is looking forward to using all the experience and knowledge she gained over the years to help horses, to enlighten horse riders/owners in Japan, and more than anything, to continue spreading the Masterson magic one horse at a time!
| |
Tomoko is working on her schedule of courses in Japan. Stay tuned to the Beyond Horse Massage course page for updates.

Masterson Method Instructor Walter Saxe was recently featured in an article in a Polish magazine! Congratulations Walter!
While I did not translate the entire article using a translation program (copyright law), I was able to translate portions of it for my own reading pleasure, and you may wish to do the same. In any case - our Polish-reading audience will enjoy it!

About the Masterson Method Equine Specialist Program
The Masterson Method Equine Specialist specializes in sharing specific light touch Masterson Method techniques with persons served in equine-assisted learning and therapy programs. By doing this bodywork on horses, participants deepen their connection with horses while also gaining self-awareness and self-regulation skills; meanwhile, therapy horses are tended to through simple bodywork and learn a new way of relating to people. It's a win/win!

We get some wonderful emails from horse-lovers around the world. It's very gratifying to hear how The Masterson Method® makes a difference for horses and humans. Here is one from Linda, in Finland...
Thank you, you have truly changed my life, and how I see horses. My horse also thanks you, he is feeling wonderfully relaxed.
Today it hit me why I had not read that book of the Masterson Method® before. I watched one of the videos some time ago, and it worked on all the horses I tried it on. It’s basically bodywork that aims to release physical and mental tension. I felt like - if I open this door, and walk through it, it will shift my world and there is no going back to seeing horses the way I used to.
This week I practiced the different techniques taught in the book almost every day. One of my horses gets really anxious in the winter. He gallops around and bucks and kicks with fearful eyes, and his heart beats through the roof. He’s sure there are lions in the forest, and he’s scouting them at all times. I have always felt that there must be a way that I can help him. This morning when he was completely relaxed after our bodywork session, not rushed, anxious, nor paranoid of ghosts, I had tears in my eyes. I let him free in the big arena where he normally goes crazy...He walked a little and rolled in the snow and then came back to me, and just stood there quietly, as if to say thank you. I think I have found the missing piece of the puzzle, for me and for the horse. This horse is called “Hope in the air”. I feel like he has been sent to me to change my life and guide me as I try to find solutions to the puzzles he brings my way.
Greetings from snowy Finland, Linda
| |
Despite his name "Hope", he is a gelding! :) He was born in France, raised to become a race horse. I guess they named him with hopes for big money, whilst I have "hope in the air" for a better future for horses and their humans.

Another Masterson Method® success story! Read on...
Hi, I just wanted to give a testimony to your wonderful method. I am a 73-year-old widow and have only been involved with horses for 2 years. Someone showed me the Masterson Method Bladder Meridian Technique and I tried it on one of the lesson horses at the ranch. I started working with Bronco about a year ago. I have been learning your method on my own with the help of your book and videos.
He runs from others who are trying to "catch" him but he allows me to walk up and work on him at liberty. Yesterday was unbelievable. When I walked up he allowed me to put his halter on with no hesitation. I led him off to a spot in the pasture. I lightly put my hand on his poll and he immediately dropped his head and sighed. It was almost as if he if said - ah you're here, now I can relax. I did the bladder meridian, withers wiggle, and he even let me do the cervical flexion for the first time.
He never tried to walk away even though the lead rope was on the ground. I was with him about 45 minutes. When I left he just stood there and as I walked off he turned his head and looked at me until I was out of sight.
Another wonderful time I can share was many months ago I went out into the pasture. Bronco was with several of the other horses. I didn't have a halter or lead rope. When I went up to him he let me do the whole sequence of the bladder meridian for his left side. He walked away a few feet and layed down and rolled - right in front of me. When he was finished I was able to do the right side and then he just walked off with the rest of the herd. That was the first time I really saw a huge release from him.
Thank you so much. I really just wanted you all to know how wonderful your method is, even if we can't attend a class. There is so much we can learn from your book and videos. I love how easy it is to get started, even if you only know the Bladder Meridian Technique. Have a very blessed and wonderful New Year.

Glenys Bragg, MMCP
Tirau, Waikato, New Zealand
I have ridden from a very young age attending pony club, hunting, show jumping, distance riding and generally just loving my horse companions, and can be found most weekends with my best Pal Joòp. My Aunty and Uncle were great competitive riders and boutique breeders. I have followed in my Aunty’s footsteps also having fun breeding the ultimate New Zealand Hunting, sport-horse types.
It was from owning a big young gangly hunter that led me down a path of needing to know more about how their bodies work to stay sound. I started my Bodywork journey with other modalities and working closely with equissage, a barefoot trimmer, saddle-fitters, dentists, and a nutritionist before I found the Masterson Method®.
My first weekend course was 7 years prior to Final Certification and I feel that was perfect timing for me to evolve into this wonderful modality of working with the horse.
I work full time and for the past 15 years have given my best self to improving competitive sport horses. I have thoroughly enjoyed the constant learning and evolving into an MMCP. I now feel I bring a good holistic approach to my treatment style.
I am based in Tirau, in the mighty Waikato. New Zealand and my passion is to help more people to understand a Happy Horse makes a Better Team. Pictured above with Hennessy, one of the horses I’ve bred.

Bianca Kolk, MMCP
Steenwijk, Overijssel, Netherlands
Interested in horses from an early age, I competed in dressage competitions and trained as a (dressage) instructor and became a dressage judge. I also enjoyed taking outdoor rides. Always looking for more knowledge, I became acquainted with instructional psychology and followed the training to become a Horse Profile Coach and a Rider Preferences Coach Level 3.
The picture was not yet complete for me because I felt I could not help the horses enough. I trained as an equine sports masseur, but my horse at that time, a Thoroughbred, did not always like the techniques of sports massage. During that period, the first weekend seminars were just being organized in the Netherlands and I attended them out of pure curiosity. Due to illness, it took a while before the journey could continue, but it has now been completed. And what an amazing trip it has been.
My current horse also benefits from the Masterson Method®. She is a puzzle, but piece by piece we solve a problem, and the Masterson Method has already provided much improvement for her. The positive change in a horse after treatment with the Masterson Method makes me happy every time. I’ve even tried the Masterson Method with some students and if they can relax, it works for the rider too! Treating horses and being able to guide them further in training, as well as teaching the rider, completes the picture for me.

Jennifer Bober, MMCP
Aberdeen, Maryland
Jenn began her relationship with horses at age 5, taking lessons at a local farm. As she got older, she participated in 4-H, riding and competing on various ponies and horses. To get extra time with her obsession, she did barn chores, taught lessons, and did anything she could to spend extra time on the farm. Jenn rode horses through college, trail riding, competing in hunters, and dabbling in eventing and low-level dressage. After college, law school and practicing as a prosecutor resulted in a detour from horses for nearly a decade, but she remained horse crazy and just couldn’t stay away from them.
In 2016, she bought Bourbon, an OTTB who always seemed somewhat uncomfortable in his body. A few years later, she thought that a traditional massage might help him feel better, but he wasn’t able to relax. As she researched better ways of helping him, two local MMCP’s suggested the Masterson Method®. It was an instant hit with Bourbon! The light touch and cooperative style of the Masterson Method is what he needed to finally soften his eye and let go of tension throughout his body. A true believer of the benefits of bodywork, Jenn strives to bring the Masterson Method to as many horses as she can to have them feeling and performing their best.
Through her business, Masterful Massage Equine Bodywork, Jenn offers Masterson Method bodywork sessions to clients within a 50 mile radius of Aberdeen, Maryland.

Emma Cassidy, MMCP
Kent, United Kingdom
I have always had horses and enjoyed many years in the Pony Club, and then the local Riding Club. I was fortunate enough to be part of a Quadrille team and then through my job as a firefighter, competed with my horse in the World Fire Fighting Games and Blue Lights Horse of the Year show when it came to Anitree in Liverpool.
I came across the Masterson Method® by chance on the Internet, looking for ways to help my beautiful old horse with his arthritis. I saw Jim’s videos on You-Tube and was fascinated. I went straight up the yard and tried the bladder meridian on my second little pony who never said a word and was extremely stoic! Using this technique I got midway down my pony's neck and his head dropped and he started yawning! I was so amazed I had to learn more.
I bought Jim’s Beyond Horse Massage book and enrolled in the weekend seminar. From here I have never looked back and now being an MMCP I am excited to be able to help horses release their tension and find their hidden secrets. I have been very lucky to have a long career in the emergency services helping many people and animals through some of their darkest days. I feel very honoured to add to this with the Masterson Method and be able to work with horses and help them remove layers of tension and improve their comfort and performance.

Jamila Brummel, MMCP
Vaassen, Gelderland, Netherlands

Meghan Dowling, MMCP
Durango, Colorado
Originally from northern Minnesota, Meghan did not come from a horse family but was lucky enough to have parents who supported her horse obsession from an early age. She started taking riding lessons at eight years old, then worked at the stable at the age of ten and was able to own her own horse shortly after. She spent her childhood trail riding and had a passion for barrel racing and pole bending. After an injury to her barrel horse after high school, Meghan was introduced to dressage which has become a lifelong passion.
Meghan has continued to work in the equine industry since that first stable job when she was ten. She spent a year as a working student in Stouffville, Ontario working at a dressage barn, worked as head wrangler at a guest ranch in Crawford, CO, worked for outfitters packing hunters into the wilderness, spent a summer packing mules in Glacier National Park and has been managing a breeding farm in Durango, CO for the last eight years. She owns two Arabians with whom she practices dressage and enjoys trail riding in the mountains as much as she can. She has just gotten into endurance riding as well, and hopes to start competing more with her young gelding next year.
After hearing about the Masterson Method®, Meghan took the weekend course and was hooked. Masterson Method opened up her eyes to a whole new level of communicating with horses both on the ground and in the saddle. She finds the challenging horses to be the most rewarding and loves how this method works WITH the horse to release tension. There’s nothing like watching a horse who is full of tension just MELT and let everything go!
Meghan enjoys working with clients and their horses to keep the horses feeling the best that they can, while educating clients on how they can best help their equine partner.

Newly Certified Equine Specialists
Our Certified Equine Specialists have worked through an abbreviated certification program designed to be accessible and relevant for equine-assisted services (EAS) professionals and volunteers. The MMES can volunteer to offer simple bodywork to EAS horses and/or partner with their EAS program to co-facilitate a new equine-assisted learning activity, such as the Bladder Meridian Technique, as a means for participants to “give back to the horse” while also creating connection.

Yoshi Babcock, MMES
Northville, Michigan
Yoshi is a licensed psychologist and certified Equine Guided Learning coach & facilitator. In 2011, she experienced the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, which led her to connect to horses while trying to figure out the meaning of the traumatic experience. During her quest, her mentor and friend introduced her to The Masterson Method® as well as other modalities. She felt the intuitive nudge to explore deeper and became certified as an MMES in 2023.
Her passion for connecting with horses continues, and she is excited to incorporate the Bladder Meridian technique into her psychotherapy and coaching practice and her private time with horses.
