Students Raise Money

for Costa Rica Mission Trip

In preparation for their upcoming mission trip to Costa Rica, the Prince senior class sponsored “Coins for Change” in which they raised money for the house-build project they will complete on their trip.

Seniors visited each lower school classroom and explained the process of the house builds and the significant ways the houses change the lives of Costa Ricans. Students were asked to support the effort by raising $2500 – the cost of one build.

Lower school students and families gave generously and in four days raised $6,136.65! Seniors worked throughout the week to collect and count the money and plan to share pictures of the houses with students upon their return.

Director of Campus Life Nick Wilbur explains that the extra funds raised will enable the group to help the families even more than originally planned. “We plan to purchase a refrigerator and other items for each home that will improve the quality of life for those families.”

Seventy-three seniors and nine faculty chaperones will travel to Costa Rica from March 23rd – 28th. In addition to building houses, the group will hold a Vacation Bible School for children in the village and share the Gospel with the families they encounter.

Prince Fine Arts Programs Partner

with Local Ministries

Two Prince Fine Arts programs recently partnered with local ministries to help meet the needs of those programs in the greater Athens community.

In January, the Prince National Art Honors Society held its 12th annual Empty Bowls silent auction. Student artists created beautiful handmade bowls filled with themed goodies that were auctioned to the highest bidder. All proceeds went to benefit local homeless shelter "A Bigger Vision". This year's total was $4,884.

At their recent performance of Bright Star, the fine arts cast and crew partnered with the Athens Pregnancy Center (APC) to raise awareness for the value of human life and the need to support women and their unborn babies. Patrons had the option of purchasing a "dessert theatre" ticket for an additional $15, and the APC was present at each performance to educate attendees about the services they offer to the community. After four performances, the students raised $4,500 for the APC.

Prince high school English students in Mrs. Skaggs’s Literary Types class recently participated in a cross-curricular activity with physics teacher Col Dale Autry.

The students are reading the non-fiction book, Bomber Mafia, by Malcom Gladwell that examines the doctrine of precision aerial bombing as a means to win World War II. With a personal history as a bomber pilot in the Air Force as well as experience teaching military history strategy at the college level, Col Autry led students in a three-dimensional physics lab in which they calculated how far a bomb would horizontally travel while dropping at a constant speed.

Students worked together to make the calculations and hit the target on the bullseye.

Performing Arts Students Employ Interdisciplinary Studies

When enjoying a Prince Fine Arts production, audiences can easily assume the amount of work, preparation, and rehearsal necessary for a quality performance. However, audiences may not realize there is an entire academic process in which Prince students participate before they ever begin to learn lines, music, or choreography or embark on set construction or costume design.

This academic approach involves the use of dramaturgy, a process by which students methodically study dramatic composition and the corresponding theatrical representation. Through this process, students can understand the historical context of a work as well as spiritual, political, cultural, and relational themes relevant to the story. Students also analyze character development and musical genres and any relevant symbolism.
