"Rocktober" is finally here, a popular time for opportunistic Maryland fishermen. Plummeting autumnal water temperatures in the Chesapeake Bay incite a shift in rockfish behavior, leading swarms of the striped bass to deeper waters along channel edges – and in hot pursuit of angler bait.
The summer and fall season, according to regulations for 2023, began Aug. 1 and extends to Dec. 10. During this time, anglers are able to keep one striped bass per person, per day, with minimum size being 19 inches and a maximum length of 31 inches.
Fall fishing on the Chesapeake provides an opportunity at catching more than just rockfish. Chances at bluefish, spot and perch, though not as common, are possible.
