Halloween was the big event of the week and it was fantastic! The K-5 Parade was adorable and the Middle School block party was amazing. Thank you to the 90 volunteers and Salmon Bay Staff who worked hard to make it fun for the kids.

Enrichment Fees for K-5 Families:
You should have all received letters outlining the 2024/2025 Enrichment Fees. During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects. Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee at the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee). It allows our teachers the opportunity to choose the programs, projects and events that can best enhance their curriculum and excite their class.
The fee this year is $100 per student, scholarship funds are available.
Payment Options:
-
We have an online payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the payment portal by logging in to your student’s SPS Source account. Click here for instructions on how to access your student’s Source account and the SchoolPay system. Once you are logged in the Source, navigate to SchoolPay using the menu on the left side of your screen.
-
You may drop off a check at the Main Office. Checks should be made out to Salmon Bay School. Please write Enrichment Fee and your student’s name(s) in the For/Memo line on the bottom left part of the check.
-
You can request a scholarship through your students’ teacher or Salmon Bay Elementary Social Worker Allie Ash.
- There is also an option to add a scholarship donation to your online SchoolPay shopping cart.
The due date for Enrichment Fees is November 8, 2024.

Wed, November 6th & 13th 6-8pm - Screenagers, Salmon Bay Cafetorium
We live in a digital world where technological advancement and their integration in our lives grows deeper and faster each day. There is growing recognition that social media and excessive screen time contribute to serious mental health concerns among our youth. To mitigate the negative impact of screens, we must tune into the latest research, set boundaries, and establish healthy screen use habits at school and home.
To support this journey, the FOSB PIE Committee and school staff invite our community to a viewing and discussion of Screenagers. The original version focused on middle- and high-schoolers will be shown on Nov 6. The newest elementary version will be shown on Nov 13. Free onsite childcare and pizza available for potty-independent children - RSVP for childcare here to guarantee we have sufficient staffing and food for your child(ren).

Please take FOSB’s After School Program Caretaker Survey! Help shape the future of after-school programs at Salmon Bay. Your feedback will help us create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. Currently, classes are offered through Grade 6 due to low enrollment by middle school children. Caretaker input is also needed to see if we should expand after-school programs for middle schoolers! Survey is open through the end of November.

FOSB - Enrichment Fees: Did You Know?
As this is the time of year when families are asked to pay school enrichment fees, we field questions about how FOSB is involved in funding scholarships. All students are able to participate in SB programming, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. The partnership that FOSB has with the school is that FOSB pledges to fill the gap between what was collected and what the activities cost the school to host. Historically, and anecdotally, the scholarship rate runs 10-15%. The FOSB website shares their annual budget — explore and you’ll see that there is $38k (about 13%) budgeted towards supporting students with scholarships this year.
You may have noticed that SchoolPay also collects scholarship donations. Is this confusing? YES! Is the scholarship money you may have already donated via SchoolPay appreciated? ABSOLUTELY! If you already donated to scholarships via SchoolPay, should you also donate to FOSB’s Direct Giving campaign launching today? FOR SURE! Donations to FOSB, a 501(c)3 organization, are tax deductible and are eligible for employer matching. In addition to the money budgeted for student scholarships, we have $300k+ of other spending we do each year in support of our teachers, students, and community. Check it out, ask questions for understanding.
What else can we help clarify?

Reminder: Sister School Supply Drive:
Salmon Bay students recently learned about Sister Schools, a non-profit educational organization that promotes compassion, service, and social responsibility. Our sister school is Kiyunga, Uganda. Salmon Bay is currently holding a supply drive for the most needed supplies; a pencil for a student in Uganda is precious, students use the same pencil all year until they cannot sharpen it anymore.
A flyer describing the kinds of supplies students are collecting to support their peers in Kiyunga was sent home with students last week. Please bring donations to your child's classroom.
Volunteers from Sister Schools will return on November 6th to collect supplies. They will then package and ship everything to Uganda. It will arrive in the spring for our sister school students to use.

Missed picture day all together? Or perhaps, you would like a TAKE 2? Picture Retake day will be Tuesday, November 19th.
For families who have ordered photos, they should be arriving home with your student soon!

Cafeteria Notes:
No Food or Drink Sharing Policy:
Parents, to keep all students safe, and to avoid conflicts with food allergies, we have a no food or drink sharing policy at Salmon Bay.
This has been announced to students during lunch, but some still insist on sharing, or asking for the food/drink of table mates. Your help with discussing this with your child is appreciated.
Evie Taylor, AP

Attendance:
Morning Arrival/Absence:
The school day begins at 8:55am for K-8th grade. Students should be in their classroom ready to begin work when the school day begins. If your student arrives after 8:55 they will need to stop by the office to sign in and get a tardy slip.
To report your child absent, please email us at salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org or call us at 206-252-1728. When reporting your child absent, please include first and last name and the nature of your student’s absence.
Multiple Day Planned Absence:
If your student is going to miss more than two school days, please fill out the Planned of Absence Form and submit this form to the main office at least one week in advance of the absence. Planned absences can be excused for medical appointments, religious or other one-time events. Family vacations or family trips during regular school days are unexcused.
Riding home on the Bus with a friend:
If your student is planning to ride home with another student who is assigned to a bus route, a temporary transportation pass (Yellow Card) must be obtained through our school office. We do require a signed note/phone call or email from a parent/guardian giving permission for their student to ride the bus with a friend, please include route number and full names of students. Bus pass request must be made at least one hour prior to dismissal so please plan ahead of time!
Picking up students for Appointments:
If you are picking up a student for an appointment, please call the main office 5-10
minutes before your arrival so we can call your student down for pick-up. It gets quite
busy, and a call serves as a great reminder to us and helps us keep everything moving
on time.
If you have any questions regarding attendance please contact our Attendance coordinator, Ileana De Leon.

Notes From the Nurse:
A few important reminders:
- Please keep your child home if they are sick. Also, please do not give them sickness medication prior to school, as this medication will wear off while at school and symptoms will return
- Your child CANNOT self-carry medication (even over-the counter medication) unless approved by me. Your child cannot TAKE medication (even over-the-counter medication) at school without the proper forms in place
-
Here is a link for COVID/Respiratory Illness guidelines.
- Children can easily catch lice through contacts with friends at school, home and in the community. Finding lice early makes it easier to get rid of them. Doing regular head checks on your children is your best defense!
I am at Salmon Bay every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, or if I can be of further assistance. I look forward to partnering with you and your child!
